I have 3 RIR's that lay almost every day, 1 black Australorp that lays almost every day, and 3 Buff Orpingtons that lay almost every day. Then there is the one Buff Orpington that sits in the nesting box for about an hour each day, and never lays an egg. She has never laid as far as I know! Every day though, she faithfully chooses a nesting box and sits for an hour and never leaves anything behind. I don't think she's an egg eater because I have watched her and when she is done sitting she hops out of the box and doesn't turn back. She is 13 months old.
I just left her sitting out there in the box a little while ago. I will go back after a while and see if she left anything for me, but I do not have my hopes up. I got an egg from everyone else already today. Maybe she will surprise me one day! Maybe something is wrong with her and she just can't lay eggs?
I don't think she's broody, she only sits on the nest for about an hour each day and spends the rest of her time roaming with the flock. (we are blessed with 13 acres which include woods and pasture so they have plenty of space).
