Hey y’all, I’m getting ducks this spring to add to chickens, does anyone have recommendations as to which duck breeds are good winter layers, if any are? Thanks!
Most of the egg breeds (Khaki Campbell’s, Welsh Harlequins, Indian Runners, etc.) will lay through their first 1-3 winters. But, as they get older they take some time off to recoup during the winter. If you want eggs every winter add a new female or two every year.
Our silver appleyards lay through the winters their first few years and then they progressively take longer breaks each winter. We do not push laying (e.g., supplemental lighting, etc.). Given the other attributes of SAs, we find them to be a great bird...and they recently moved from “threatened” to “watch” on the Livestock Conservancy's Conservation Priority List, so you're helping the breed when you work with them.
