I have had a 2nd 2 month old chick get wry neck. Both pullets. The only link between the 2 beside genetics is they both went upside down on extremely hot days. Will the extreme heat cause this? They get vitamins and electrolytes in their water. Plus they are still on chick starter/grower.

Wry neck can be caused by infection, injury, and vitamin deficiencies (also there are diseases causing "twisted necks" here have a look at the diagnosis charts at bottom):

Certainly brain swelling can cause it...but I have never seen it and had hot days here. I would guess if it isn't injury then it is infection or vitamin deficiency.

There are many many cases of apparent vitamin deficiencies on BYC...even though the feed has vitamins in them.

Some even use human vitamins on their wry neck chickens, convinced that the quality is better.

Browneggblueegg.com has a link under "articles" on the left column - "crookneck" outlining a treatment for wry neck for silkies if you are interested.

Also there is the "let's talk wry neck" thread here on BYC.

Lack of any other symptoms is going to rule out illness in my opinion. So assuming a vitamin deficiency what can I start giving the other chicks in this group to prevent any more wry neck. They are getting purina starter/grower feed and vitalytes in their water.

You are welcome!

I would start by looking at the let's talk wry neck thread, as there are posts on there that might help. Hopefully you will get some more responses here, as well!

Thanks. After getting her out in the sun this morning. She is holding her head up and walking normal. Her head is still crooked but maybe with some more vitamins she will pull thru. here are a couple pics from just a bit ago.

I had the same thing happen to me
I had just finished nursing my first case of wry neck back to health when another one of my birds just came down with it! The day after my first was healed! I'm currently nursing her right now
I suspect its nutritional in my case and possibly your case too
In my cases I believe my birds were lacking vitamin E
I since got a supplement of E to give the rest of my flock
I'm using Alan Stanford's treatment for wry neck and have had excellent results with my first case. She is now 100% and you would never known she had such a severe cases
I'm currently using the same treatment on my second bird
She is only about one week into treatment but is responding well. She's not 100% yet but can eat on her own and is walking forward again! This is a big improvement. His treatment consists of giving vitamin E and selenium to help absorb the E and vitamin B and liquid children's vitamins polyvisol without iron and predinsone
This treatment had been very successful in my first bird and I'm seeing great improvement in my second bird. Thank God. I hope this helps you out. so basically because you also have two cases I'd look into finding a E supplement because its likely nutritional causes like mine is
Wry neck itself is not a disease but a symptom. It can be caused from nutrition injure or genetics. I wish you the best and if you have any questions just pm me and I would be happy to help you. This takes patience but can be cured. Your not alone. Good luck and God bless .

Can I add Vitamin E to the water for the rest of the flock? How much of each are your treating your bird with and how many times a day. I think my baby is probably about the same size as a full grown silkie.

For the rest of the flock I use a powder concentrate of vitamin A D And E mixed with a B supplement called vita pro B. I got these supplements from first state vet online. The package name of the A D E powder is DAWE-ADE.its to be supplemented in the water then I purchased a vitamin E liquid that is applied to the water at the rate of 7/10cc per gallon.I also got this from first state vet.I let my birds drink freely of the vitamins
For my sick bird I use 1 capsule of 400 milligram vitamin E into her food three times a day. In order for them to readily absorb the vitamin E I mix a small amount of crushed selenium tablet onto her food once a day. A word of warning too much selenium is toxic so use a small amount
I also give the B vitamin its mixed into the water with the A D E
The liquid E for water is given separately once daily. All of my supplements come from first state vet supply online. If you don't see the supplement online in the catalog contact Dr brown of first state vet and he can send it out to you
I contacted him and he recommended these supplements and sent them out to me. The vitamin E and selenium are over the counter along with the polyvisol. The predinsone is prescription only as its a steroid and used in severe cases. I use the predinsone on both my birds as they both were severe. You can find the treatment I'm using on line.its Alan Stanford's treatment for wry neck
His website is brown egg blue egg.com look in his glossy and click on crook neck. You will find dose and schedules. I add the supplements on top of this treatment. It was very successful for my first bird as she is 100% healed now. My second bird is showing great improvements. I hope this helps
Any more questions at all please ask I'm happy to help in any way I can. Or you can pm me if you like. Best wishes

The supplements I got from first state vet are the ADE powder and vitaproB and liquid vitamin E to be added to the water. I hope this helps the rest are over the counter except the predinsone which is RX only. The predinsone is only for severe cases. Hope this helps
