6 weeks! They're all so big and friendly (the cochins are, anyway)
definitely 3 pullets and 1 cockerel of the cochins, and 3 of the japanese ones are girls as well. cornish x are out of the picture finally
I have seen Betty disciplining the male chicks. It's hilarious, she's so patient about...
I am sad about it as well, but luckily the remaining four are exceptionally friendly and it's still looking like 1 cockerel and 3 pullets. I crouch down and they come running to me!
2 Weeks update: Betty and her many babies are doing pretty great! 2 cochins failed to thrive no matter what I did within the first couple of days, and one Japanese bantam had neurological issues so he got put down after a week. So that leaves 15 total, and they're absolutely thriving.
I...
I ordered chicks a couple days ago, they arrived a few hours ago. I stuck them all under my Cochin bantam (Betty) who has been sitting for a while and she took them all immediately. Somehow she has fit 18 chicks under her! 6 bantam Cochin, 6 Japanese bantam, and 6 Cornish x. I tend to have luck...
I just had my first order of chicks arrive today, got them from cackle hatchery. All alive and healthy and there's an extra of each breed so I have 18 instead of 15! I ordered them Tuesday, they hatched and shipped Wednesday
This is Teriyaki, my 9 week old copper maran. I'm assuming he's a rooster due to how red his comb is and how more rambunctious he is; but I'd like other opinions on that since the breed has large combs for hens. I don't have any other copper maran for reference; my Orpington hens have massive...
There is a piece of skin that can be put there, it's just unstretched and won't stay in place. I might try to trim them once she wakes up, all the handling probably stressed her
It looks worse rn because I just slathered it in ointment. It was dry originally and I didn't see any damage to the crop at all, I used the wet q tip to pick up the skin and peek just to be sure.
My 3 week old crested legbar chick has a wound on her chest. She's hen raised, I was outside checking on the babies and noticed a tiny speck of blood on my hand and discovered that she skin that covers her crop was torn. She's got a square inch of flesh showing, only damage seems to be to the...
Afaik, Easter egger is the term for a mutt chicken that lays/should lay colored eggs, usually has one of the colored egg laying breeds as a close relative
I got this week-old chick from an assorted bantam pullet bin. Any clue as to what breed she could be? She's got feathered legs, 4 toes on each foot, and a gold color beak/legs. In the pic with multiple chicks, she's in the middle with a lavender orpington to her right.
Not from a TSC or chain...
My buff Orpingtons are insanely friendly. All run up when I walk outside, they hang out with my wife and I in the garden, come running when I say their names. I've put chicken diapers on two of em and taken one to a farmers market on my arm, she's tame and calm enough that she can be set down in...
Here's Maple currently! I bought 5 more chicks from a locally owned farm supply store, I have a friend wanting his own hens and he offered to give me a bag of feed if I'd raise him a few pullets. Maple took to all the new babies immediately, even the two that were a week old got pushed...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm not exactly new, but this is the first time I personally owned them and cared for them directly. My dad has had chickens on our farm since I was 11 (I'm 23 now) but I never did anything with them and we didn't make them friendly...
