    Where roots prevented me from securing the hardware cloth on a steep slope I used an unopened bag of ready mix. After it rained it got rock hard and made a great step. Edit: Cutting the roots would have killed the trees that provide the chickens shade.

    If your lids going to cover the top the bench & the 2 x 4's are going to support the lid (and anything on it) a piano hinge might work.

    Yes it defeats the purpose of designing them to be bolted together by putting drawers under them.Your best bet would be find a broken cabinet or window that hinges open.

    I've seen people take old detergent bottles and cut a piece to make temporary hinges.

    Self closing door hinges might work.They'd shut automatically once you opened it.

    If you make a drawer underneath the top you can hinge the top open using concealed hinges and soft lid stays.
