Gender specific feathering?

Is it true that this type of feather pattern is specific to pullets/hens? I’ve seen it said many times but I want to be sure I understand correctly - is it the feather pattern itself or is it the feather pattern in specific breeds? I’m referring to the neck feathers where the patterning makes it look like the feathers are ‘sharp’. The two brown ones are some of my older hens, and the gray one is a 5 week old chick that I am assuming I can trust is a pullet because of this patterning?
