Hi from Suffolk, VA! I have a small group, just six. My biggest frustration this time of year is figuring out sick from broody. I have two in the nest box. If they're sick, I want to help!
Sick birds rarely hang out in nest boxes. Broodies and lower ranking bullied birds will however. If they fluff up and screech at you when you reach in, they are broody.
Welcome to BYC. Take one out of the nest sit her on the ground. Usually if they are broody they will shriek like a banshee, maybe even try to peck you. Once on the ground a broody will puff up and run low to the ground while making a growling noise. Sometimes they make another clucking sound. The broody will run to water, food, and make a giant stinky poop before running back to her nest.
