What did you do with your flock today?

I remember reading that once upon a time peoples standard housing was one large room with a loft. People slept in the loft and all their livestock slept on the main floor. Straw was used as flooring and spring cleaning was the once a year when it all got raked out and replaced. I can imagine my germaphob hubby and youngest daughter in those conditions... we'd have to live next to a river and they'd spend half their time in the water trying to keep clean
That was to keep everyone warm along with time, energy and materials right?

We had one of our horse castrated in a beautiful barn on the North Shore. That is when my dream started. Nice stalls and pens with an office on top. Could not cost more than the average home as we can stay little.
We have a few acres on the BI and I would love to make that happen there and live my happily ever after. Dream, dream, dream. ☁️😴☁️☁️ think I'll take a nap and go to my happy place. 😆

I don't have any better ideas either ☹️. I use roofed runs and dogs for free range time. I also like the idea of trying tight stretched etc. Just might work. Would chicken wire be an option?

I don't think so, the area I'm trying to cover is well over 25 feet. I'm also looking into the possibility of putting a lot more plants up there or, really worst case scenario, sectioning it off so the chickens can't go up there. Which would kinda suck, because the plan was to eventually move them fully up there, and even though the hawks have only attacked in that one area, it wouldn't stop them from doing it somewhere else.
Ugh. I've never had a major issue with hawks before, I don't know why I'm having issues now. >:[

I mean I technically know a lot of things. This isn’t an ideal setup. They are big enough to go into the coop (7 weeks). They’re actively not in the pen. Everything is a chaotic mess. I’m concerned that my favorite is a roo so kinda spending QT with her (I hope) - the nearer lap chicken. I was in the middle of cleaning before planning to finish homework, then had the mass pen exodus and was trapped by the birb in hand in the effort of returning them to said pen.

Upside: I have a massive list of how to brood better next batch. Downside: I have six adorable “bedroom chicken” that are way too comfortable with me and I’m a little heartbroken having to kick them out. Also the money I’m investing in cleaning supplies for after is absurd. (Don’t do this. I think they’re fine with this, you and any air purifiers you have won’t be. 😂)
ALL my chickens think they live indoors with us! Sometimes it is hard to persuade them otherwise. And it's all my fault! 🤣
At least Ferdy is house-trained and I'm working on Stanley. The girls are a lost cause so they rarely get past the kitchen. Although Gladys hid in the Christmas Tree for 3 hours before we realised she'd snuck in 🤣
My chickens are super friendly and social though. Despite the constant cleaning, I wouldn't have it any other way!

Hello! This is a place to post pictures/talk about what you and your flock have done today.

I was on a zoom call earlier and Iris, my rooster, decided to stand behind me and crow repeatedly. Thankfully I was on mute, but it was still annoying. They couldn’t see him, but they could see me trying to make him quiet, which was a little embarrassing.
Here’s a pic of my boy with some mini roses.

What about you guys? Have you done anything interesting with your flock today?

Here are a few pictures of my birds.

I clipped all their wings and moved them in with the adults so that I could move ducks and turkeys into the brooder

Sounds like a lovely dream! My dad used to take us pigeon hunting at night in a friend's barn. It took us forever to rid that thing of pigeons. It was huge and had an upstairs with a bunch of rooms on one side and open space on the other. The upstairs area was on two sides of the building and the other two sides were just straight walls. Now you have me imagining a big barn with a skylight in the center, a loft that circles all four sides and made for living. The main floor would have a garden right in the center and animal spaces under the loft areas...

Think I need to go nap and dream too ❤️😂

That's too bad on the hawks. I wonder if there's any hawk deterrent that could help? I've read of a farmer using those air socks like these to deter predators.

Also those kind you see at businesses sometimes...the kind with a huge tube with arma and a face attached. A motor blows air inside and make them whip around and dance non stop. I was reading that they do a bang up job of keeping herds safe from predators and are gaining use on farms for that.

Your babies sound so adorable 😍

My neighbors would think I really lost it if I put one of these in my garden. LOL

But I can see they'd probably work well. Have it controlled with a motion detector so it jumps up when the deer get close.

Those things always made me laugh!

What I read said they just wheel it around to change the position of it every so often to keep it effective.

I love the idea of a motion detector added. If used for deer, you might end up with the occasional bit of venison from deer having heart attacks 🤣

Yall I tried catching up but life has been so crazy with these 2 new grandbabies and both families having been sick off and on for like 2 months.
Between helping them and tending to the gardens I'm exhausted 😩
I popped on to ask a question bout my run...yall might remember my run is on a slight slope behind our house.
Whenever we don't have any rain for days it has always gotten super super dry to the point I would have to hose it down periodically to keep the dust at bay cuz I do deep litter method. (I think that's I right one and I do deep bedding method in their coop).
Anyways it has had a massive WET area for quite some time now and I know that can get to be unhealthy. I've been putting put the PDZ, first Saturday lime, and one other one I can't remember name of. I've also done out nearly 2 big bags of pine shavings to help dry it out...still wet.
What could be causing this?
The only thing at all I can think of that has changed is when I "tried"(being keyword) to clean out somewhat a layer on the bottom for composting my gardens I got a layer or so down into the ground...should I NOT have gotten the ground and only gotten the loose stuff just at the ground level?
I've thought of yall often and hope yall are all doing well! Especially @kurby22 with the news of the recent earthquake out yonder. Again please forgive me for being absent so long! I'm just trying to stay a float lol
