So I got new 4 SGs with Black Copper Marans and a RIR, total of 6 chicks few weeks after you guys. I’d been getting average 5-6 eggs from them, whereas 1-2 eggs from my 30 older layers (18 months to 3 yrs old range) separate coop and no lighting supplement on both.

Normal for newbie layers, all four of my EEs had humongous eggs with double yolks for a month or so then normalized. Now my SGs I haven’t noticed double yolks yet but some will during the first few months.

Yep that’s been what I’d been noticing with this breed, they’re always curious and alert. Talking about the eggs, did I missed the the color? Is it white or is it brown?

You guys are all so far along, my Gems are 8 wks and 5 days, still can’t tell the roo from the pullets only thing I’ve noticed was 2 charges me when I get near them. Way different from my Black Copper Marans @ 4-5 wks old you can tell whose the roos right away, red wattles and bigger red combs...

So those two light gray feathered ones on the far left and right w/ red combs are definitely roo huh? Then I have a roo or 2. Mine are still over 2wks old, what will I do with them ha ha. I think I also have a few roo from my 1 wk old Black Copper Marans hatched. Thinking my basement freezer...

That really light one was sold right after I picked up my chicks, they all sold out fast. But here’s some close up of my chicks. This one tried to swallow some of them, reason we took the pics in the closed door laundry lol.

I will, though you seem right on the money on that. When I was looking at the chick bin majority has some darker markings on the legs or beaks except one or 2. I tell you though, those lighter colored chicks are unbelievably cool looking so I got 2 of each.

So are the lighter ones showing the characteristics of roo? Or not ? Does it disprove our group conclusions, darker head and some dark markings on legs female? Is these sex links really a sex link? Ha ha so many qs.

Got my Sapphire Gems, camped out to get mine and helped the staff to unload direct from post office this morning. I avoided the lighter ones but got tempted to get them since they are gorgeous, just for suggestion by @PachecoPeeps & @renk777.

Their pretty knowledgeable with what they have but with new sapphire, I doubt the staff know though, they just pay extra to get them sexed.

I shall see, I will take pics of their 50 chicks that’s coming, I should camp out by their door lol.:)

Our local feed store haven’t got the new shipment yet probably tomorrow night or Friday they said. I can’t wait .

Getting the darker ones might be a good idea basing on you guys few weeks experience ahead of me since I have to get a min of 6 anyways. My last spring first year hatched of 20 assorted heritage chicks (@$20/egg) yielded four roos that I was able to give away since their high quality breeds...

This is driving me nutsso, the local feed store close to me is only expecting limited amount of SG and am not sure if I need to grab some, I don’t need anymore roos, since I got 14 Black Copper Marans ready to hatch in couple of weeks. Please help:oops:
