Hi, New member. Have been here several times for answers. Finally joined. I inherited hens when my mother I law passed away in 2019. Her hens are older and slowly dying. Built a bigger coop closer to my house with intentions to integrate her hens with new chicks last year. Couple of hers ended up dying. Vet said possible bacterial infection. Suggested not to blend flocks. Recently hatched chicks from eggs from newer hens. I enjoy playing in the dirt. Retired from healthcare last year. Medical assistant in surgical practice for over 25 years.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry for your losses. :hugs How old were these hens? Geriatric birds need supplemental heat when they get older, like old people they lose muscle mass along with not being able to adjust their internal thermostats, they can literally freeze to death. Many old birds have heart disease as well, their circulation isn't up to par either. Best wishes reestablishing your flock!
