I don't think that is necessarily true in northern Canada. I think it's because we like to play in the snow: skiing, fat biking, sledding, skating. It's all great! We do like to talk (complain?) about the weather a lot though. Right now there's not enough snow and all the skiers are getting...
My husband and I went back and forth on this in the summer when we had a hen who was ill, but still engaged with life. It's very hard to take a life and the worry of causing pain and distress at the end was something we wanted to avoid. Louise ended up dieing on her own and I think/hope it was...
It isn't better 😞. We kept him crated for three or four days and it didn't make any difference. We have looked him over multiple times and can't figure out what is wrong. We are going to try Epsom salt soaks next.
On the positive side, his tail is up and he can actually move pretty fast in his...
We tried keeping Cesario in a little man cave that I set up, hoping that it would help his leg/foot problem.
For some reason, when I released him from his crate after a few days, I started to get fewer eggs.
I now know why!
Sorry Cesario, but your boy zone has been taken over by the ladies!!
Chukki wishes everyone a happy Monday! The littles are already six months old!
This isn't much of a head shot, but shows off Cordelia's pretty feathers.
I would just her four eggs. Easier for her to cover and the more eggs she hatches, the more cockerels to deal with.
I think that you could easily incorporate one cockerel into your flock, but what if you end up with three or four? That's not going to be pleasant for the ladies or Mr P.
Just...
Thanks @ChicoryBlue. You always have such compassionate and thoughtful replies.
You are correct that I will regain his trust over time by just quietly spending time with him once he is feeling better.
He is six months old today and does not breed the hens yet, but he has been breeding the...
Thanks for asking about Cesario, @ManueB . I am feeling a bit down about his situation. Whenever there is something wrong with one the chickens, I feel ill-equipped to deal with it, but luckily they have mostly been healthy.
Cesario was okay overnight in the crate, but was in a panic the next...
Yes, my hubby is a wonderful person 💖!
Unfortunately, Cesario is still limping and holding up his foot. I prepared a crate for him and will take him off the roost and put him in there this evening and all day tomorrow. I don't imagine that he will be particularly happy about this, but hopefully...
Cesario update:
Circumstances meant that we couldn't get Cesario off the roost in the dark and he was absolutely miserable about being grabbed unceremoniously! It made me wonder if he instinctually knew that most often when a cockerel gets grabbed in that way, that his life is over.
I was so...
Everyone has been taking the chilly temperatures in stride. I have several who are moulting, but they are doing okay. It was only -12C/10F today which is not actually considered to be cold here at this time of year.
The bad news is that Cesario is limping. My husband has been away looking after...
They're doing pretty well actually although Cesario is not a fan! :lau
We brought in a straw bale for the coop and the bigs are occupied with attacking that. Meanwhile the littles are roosting outside up high in the sun.
It's funny because this would count as a lovely winter day in mid-winter, but it is the first chilly day. We have snow on the ground and no temperatures above freezing in the long range forecast. Winter is here.
