āž” Quail Hatch AlongšŸ„š

I don't handle every chick enough for them to be friendly, plus I don't know which ones are keepers till they are full grown. Last hatch I put a bucket in the aviary I'd sit on every day and eat my lunch, so they got used to me being inside. They are now a happy medium I think, calm but not particularly friendly. They'll run for treats the moment I pull my hand away, but won't swarm me.

Did you try installing a step over portion at the door? I did something like this with the chickens to hold them back as I scooted through the gate. Knee high, easy to remove if you have something big being moved.

Gate opens to the outside. Attach 18" tall something (I used a wire shelf but a board would work) so they couldn't walk through the gate but had to fly up over the step over in order to get out. Worked well for me. I did the same thing with the cages. The door didn't go to the floor and it kept those from just walking out the open door.

Good luck
I've started building access through the top. It's easier to keep them in that way -- plus, egg collecting and cleaning is easier.

Of course, I'm not as lucky as some -- these are not human-sized aviaries.

I stopped using my top open ones (or repurposed them to be side opening) because they kept flying out when I filled the food and stuff, and I got tired of clipping their wings.

I got tired of chasing them and taking them away from the dog. The dog didn't kill any, but that was the puppy. The other one wouldn't have to chew.

I'm wondering why my birds aren't bright enough to figure out how to get out. It might be the size of the door hatches I use. Or maybe because my body obscures the opening for them.

There's a first time for everything..

Just a few pics of the young'uns! They love their white sunflower hearts.
