Chelated iron safe on lawn around hens?

My husband has been constantly bugging me about yard weeds and he wants to spread chelated iron around...says it kills ground ivy and dandelions. We have a small backyard flock and I try to let them out to forage for a bit each day...does anyone know if the chelated iron is safe for them? (And, yes, he knows the chickens will eat the dandelions and personally I think we should just leave them, but I'm tired of hearing about it...)
