I'm weirdly excited for them. I have a lot more seeds, when I pull up the one silly romaine lettuce in there I'll fill that spot with more.Red Baron bunching onions... Interesting! Hubby's favorite onion is Red Baron, and we prefer the big onions that we sometimes get.
Last year, a couple of the Red Barons made a topset, like Egyptian Walking Onions, and I planted those separately. They're looking very EWO-y. I'm hoping we like them and I can integrate them in to the EWO bed. Hubby is not a fan of EWOs; maybe he'll change his tune if he likes these.
I made French onion soup with mine last year. My husband raved about it for weeks. They caramelize real nice. A lot of discussion seems to indicate seeded onions grow more plump with thicker rings of flesh than sets. I had pretty good success with my sets but I think the average size I got was about 2 to 2.5" diameter.I bought 3 bags (100 each) of Red Baron sets at the grocery. I did say they were hubby's favorite... Anyway, some of the sets are round, some are long. I made sure to plant the round ones first, to be sure I used them all.
Hubby likes how hot they get. Hot, spicy, lots of onion flavor.
