Reason #92 we don't free range our chickens. This is a crested caracara (standing on a crested cactus, heh). They're also known as the Mexican eagle although it's actually a member of the falcon family. It's an opportunistic raptor that mainly feeds on carcasses but also steals and bullies food from other birds including vultures, raids bird and reptile nests, and takes live prey.

Reached a high of 88F today but humidity was not too bad, and there was a gentle breeze. Made for a very nice day.

Neat looking bird. How common are they?

Their tip of their range just pokes up here from Mexico so we see them from time to time. People have seen them as far north as New Brunswick, though (!). I think he's a noble looking fellow, too.

Queensland temperatures dropped below zero this week, giving the sunshine state its first "real proper cold snap" of the year.

The Bureau of Meteorology's senior forescaster Felim Hanniffy said Tuesday was the coldest morning for the south-east so far this year, but the coldest temperature was recorded in the southern interior on Monday.

"Some parts of the south-east, northern interior and north-west recorded their coolest morning of the year [yesterday]," he said.

"Much of the interior had well below average temperatures."

Stanthorpe accommodation operator Marion Carrick said it was "such a beautiful time of year on the Granite Belt".

"There's something magical about a crisp, frosty morning," she said.

Parts of the southern interior saw the mercery drop down to -2 degrees Celsius on Monday. 28.4F

Closer to the coast, Brisbane got down to 10 degrees on Tuesday, while Amberley recorded 3.6 degrees.

Oakey, west of Brisbane, also felt the cold this week, as well as Richmond Airport in the northern interior where the thermometer dropped to 4.1 degrees, which was "about nine degrees below its normal minimum for this time of year".

Camooweal, in the far north-west fell to 3.9 degrees — roughly 10 degrees below average.

These "cooler outbreaks" are normal for the end of May, with the shorter days having an impact.

"We're losing that intensity of the sunshine," Mr Hanniffy explained.

"Also, when you start to see cold fronts coming up over south-east Australia, that helps to drag up that cold air and push it north."
