Grapevines on run fence?

Hello!
DH built a beautiful run for the flock, complete with a trellis entrance and a small pond for the ducks. I wanted to grow some vines that are both pretty and edible for the crew. I’m wondering if I could grow grapes and let them vine, or if the ducks would destroy a young vine before it gets established. Are grapes dangerous for them? Maybe I could just grow something like extra pea plants to have them snack on. Has anybody me tried this? Thanks for your guidance and happy Friday!!

I have a grape vine on my run, it helps provide shade from the west. The chickens love the grapes. Just use a little chicken wire cage around the base of the young plant to protect it. Once the vine matures a little it will be safe from the poultry.

You need to protect those young plants from the ducks! They love to eat grapevine leaves and will kill the plants.

Yep! Protect the point of growth. Would also be good until 1/3 of the vines have grown beyond the reach of the ducks. Improve survival by promoting grounding of tbe vines and new rootings.

Also, grape vines grow like weeds, depending on the variety, and need annual pruning, and very strong supports. With that in mind, they would be really nice out there.

I ordered about six vines for the run today, 3 varieties of each (and just in case we lose a couple) when I get them all in this spring I’ll update with pictures. I’m really excited.

If not kept trimmed they could tear down a fence/trellis.
