Hiya, I was just wondering if its possible to ship hatching eggs from the USA to Uk and if its expensive? I love showgirl chickens but they're not available over here.

i get alot of other stuff posted from the usa and it can take ages to clear customs! i have had stuff take as long as 3 weeks! having said that they ship live fish from all over the world so i would look at specialist couriers etc to get them pre cleared etc

i am in the uk what eggs are you after? i may be able to help as i own a hatchery and have many many breeds and if i dont have it i am sure i can give you a contact that does

I order motorbike parts from the uk when they come airmail small pak they take about 4 days at best at worst 6-7 days fauna and flora is sure to slow down the system

Both the US and the European Union have really strict laws about importation of biological materials, plants and animals. You probably could import eggs from the US to the UK with the proper paperwork and procedures, but it would no doubt be very time consuming and probably pretty expensive. A whole lot of hoops to jump through, probably including getting the breeding stock inspected for infectious diseases and probably an inspection or two of the actual eggs as well. You probably also need a valid reason or purpose for doing so -- scientific research or professional breeding usually are the main reasons they'll allow it.

You could probably check with your Ministry of Agriculture for the details.

Are you sure that the particular breed you want isn't available at all in the UK? It might be simpler in the long run to obtain them this way.

I did a quick search and found this EU page about importing animals and animal products into the EU -- it looks like a good starting point for you:

there is actually a thread under breeds.I think it is headed " my uk orps" or pics of?
Anyway, shipping and cost are discussed. Sounds complicated and expensive.needs vet checks , permits, ect.
One lady said it could be over $3000.oo dollors.
Also discussed in a recent thread about Lemon Yellow orps being auctioned on Ebay . something like 300.00 for eggs..........also shippped from the UK
Hope you find what you want.

i have done a bit of digging , and indeed there are alot of hoops to jump, for a start you need a USA vet to do a certificate that the eggs are disease free (how on earth they gonna do that!) plus you need customs clearance etc. do you have a pic of the breed your after? i will have a ask around thru my contacts.

Have you tried asking around in some of the UK based forums? I have seen a few folks' siggy lines stating they have showgirls. Failing that why not try and start your own line? Seems like a golden opportunity if they are so scarce!

Good luck.

20 phone calls later and......... they are indeed availiable in the uk! BUT at a price. seems there is a bit of a movement against them over here, a bit of a sniffy "there just cross's and not for the purerist" there is a small hatchery 100 mile or so from me where i know the owners well. i am going up there in a couple of weeks to have a look at the birds. if they are any good i will bring some birds back and see what the chicks hatch like (see how true they are breeding). so if anyone in the uk is interested pm me so i have an idea how many are interested. if they do breed fairly straight then i will make the chicks availiable and it wont be at the silly prices i have been quoted!
