size rafters to use for roof

Quote:
See my BYC page, my 8' x 12' Coop was built over 15 years ago with 2 x4's for the rafters and it's holding up well. I used the space between the rafters as vents for the low and high side of my roof. (Use a stronger screen then window screen for vents--raccoons can rip it open---found out the hard way, they pulled a full grown chicken through that 3 1/2" space.)

thanks again, panel. i think i'll go with the 2 x 6s as i originally planned, and with 16OC rafter spacing, as orig. planned also. The price difference is not that great compared to the strength of the thing. i'd rather build once, build well.....................

A roof is like a floor in that it is constantly subject to wear & tear.
Don't skimp to save a few bucks, you'll be sorry.
2 x 6's that are 16" apart is best.
And the steeper the roof, the better!

Good luck,
spot
