Large cochin hen, @ 3 years old, found dead this morning in nesting box. Insight appreciated....

I didnt realize other genes involved in heat tolerance! That is good to know. I will say a couple of my non floofy girls seem to pant in the heat, so it makes sense there are other factors! That is so neat that you breed for that in Fla! I have an Orpington hen, and she is a sweetheart. Ill...

Thank you for such a kind comment! I'm glad to hear that 3 years is a good age for a chicken. I see such a wide variety of responses on that. I love the large, fluffy breeds, but it was a bit foolhardy for me to aquire some for the hot, humid south. And I'm glad to know its common to not know...

Large cochin hen, @ 3 years old, found dead this morning in nesting box. Insight appreciated....

Thank you! That is what I am thinking now. At first, I wondered if it was the heat, but its still spring and I had a fan going in the coop. I'm thinking now she might have had trouble laying an egg, poor thing. Appreciate your insight!

Large cochin hen, @ 3 years old, found dead this morning in nesting box. Insight appreciated....

Thank you! I know its just part of having a flock (and have had 2 die in the past year), so am starting to handle it a bit better. I believe she was laying...i hate to admit this, but not completely certain. I have 18 hens, and some of the eggs look so similar. I do collect daily, but sometimes...

Thanks in advance for any insight or possible explanations. I just want to know if I need to change how I am taking care of my flock. She seemed fine day before yesterday, and possibly even yesterday as well, according to my daughter. It is unusually humid and hot this morning and last summer...

    Possible ripped out claw?

Was checking on my flock who had just gone in to roost, and saw blood on board. My hen, Fiona, has some type of injury to her back claw. I washed it with chlorohexidene and she is inside with me now. It is still bleeding and its been an hour at least. So we are thinking we should wrap it. Does...

    Low night temps

The electric sealed oil heaters should work great. We have one I'm going to set up. I think they put out more heat (in a safe way) than the panels, as I've heard birds need to get close to the panels to get warm. And i keep placing my little birds near the panels but they dont like being moved...

    Low night temps

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I'm sure you, like most, tried to do and follow the best advice for your flock's safety. Most advice that I see is not to add heat. But we have bantams, frizzles, and one that is molting now. I can't imagine such a brutal winter climate as you have. I...

S He is a bantam, but not quite as teeny as the Seramas! Still, I'm just glad he isnt as large as most, because he is quite feisty and wants all hens to himself! He was supposed to be a bantam "green queen" EE. He is extremely protective of all the hens, and so good to them. I put one of my...

Thank you! I'll look into the Cozy Coop..it's probably better than the Producer's Pride brand sold at Tractor Supply. Love that your roo lets you hold him! Mine wouldn't consider it, although he does jump on my back which i choose to think shows affection😆 I tried to pick up my shivering d'uccle...

-32 degrees actual temperature is not too cold - see pictures

I went to Tractor Supply and got a heating panel! I'm not sure if its the same brand you have, but i'm going to go out there and set it up this afternoon. I set it up inside just to test it, and its a bit hot to the touch, but I think the bantams would have to snuggle up to it to get warm. I...

Thank you so much for the info! I might try to order some panel heaters. And will head to store tomorrow to get thicker plastic. I am keeping a watch on them through the coop cam, and the thermometer in coop still reading 20. 7 degrees and -15 sound just awful…stay safe out in the cold!☺️

Thank you, and I agree! They spent most of the day huddled under the coop and wouldn’t leave the run. My husband and I just set up a smaller coop in our garage so if needed we can move the two little bantams in. I just got in from cleaning the outdoor coop and putting down deep shavings. Tacked...
