The sedimentation rate (sed rate) is a blood test that measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a test tube over the course of an hour. The higher the number of red blood cells that fall to the bottom, the higher the sed rate. The sed rate is also known as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).
