it’s been a while, but today I realized that my nine surviving quail got big, and I still have no clue what breed or gender they are! All Japanese quail, but I’m wondering what you call the colors. I have group pictures, as well as close ups of the less flighty ones.

Also yes, I know the setup isn’t great, I’m working on fixing up a old cheap Amazon coop, and I want to fix my fox problem (he took fourteen of my half grown chickens ) before I get my weakest, more valuable birds outside.

How old are they now? If they are over about 3 weeks then you can take photos of the Italians (golden) and the pharaoh (brown with cream stripes) we can probably tell you what you have. Those varieties you can sex by colour. The ones you have managed to get individual photos of are all ones that need vent sexing after 6-8 weeks old.

Got good pictures finally! I have at least 2 Roos, cause I heard something like an angry trill when I was moving them outside.

5 and 8 are definitely hens. The rest I'd vent sex after 6 weeks. I feel like 1 and 3 you should be able to tell by the feathers as the colour is based on wildtype but I'm not sure on that specific variation. They have no spots on their chest which suggests roo but that first one is saying hen to me for some reason! Anyway vent check after 6 weeks and you'll have your answer.

Thanks! I don’t know how to do that, but I know what the calls sound like, and once I build the coop (Amazon cheap garbage is pretty much a lost cause) they’re probably going to make the hens known by the amount of eggs when they start laying.

I can't remember, but I think it was quail one who just made himself known. I heard a funny noise, went "hmm, is that a quail crow?" turned around, and one of the white ish ones was crowing! they do sound really funny:)
