I'm pretty new to chickens so I didn't know what dual purpose meant. This was very informative and great pictures! I grew up in Japan, so I think it's pretty neat to have the Asiatic influence in our chickens today.

Thank you for this article!

That's some interesting insight! My Japanese foreign exchange student also found the chickens from her homeland interesting when I explained it to her.

This is a great list of treats! My girls favorites are bananas, watermelon, cucumbers and of course, meal worms! I tried the cabbage on a string and they completely ignored it even after I tore some leaves off and tried to hand it to them. They also enjoy cooked oatmeal (with berries) on a cold day. The joke in our house is that hubby only gets a cup of coffee from me in the morning and the chickens get oatmeal. So I've told him when he starts laying eggs for me, I'll cook him a hot breakfast. :lau

These are great ways to name your chicks/chickens! We went a different route. When we got our first 6 hens (3 different breeds), I named them using our first name initials and our last (D,B & R). So my Rhode Island Reds are Babz & Bettie, my Dominiques are Daizy & Dixie, and our Buff Orpingtons are Rosie & Reba.

With our new chicks, I used a letter from the breed name (and hopefully we really ended up with pullets like we ordered). My Wyandottes are Wilhemina, Winnifred, and Wynona, the Golden Campines are Calliope and Clementine, and the Light Brown Leghorns are Lolly and Lovey. That way if I add to those 6 breeds that we have now, I can just add more names with those starting letters in the future. Since the babies still all look too much alike, I may need to mark them when I actually put a name to a chick. Can't wait to watch them grow into their own little personalities!

Again, great article with good ideas.

Thank you for the information on training new chicks! My older hens are fairly tame and definitely trained, but I got them when they were 9-18 months old. When they hear the back door open, they come running to the gate to greet me and get their much anticipated snacks. They quickly show their disappointment when they realize it's my hubby instead of me coming outside.
My three week olds are still pretty skiddish in their brooder, but will come to my hand full of dried meal worms! Hoping they get used to me fairly quickly!

I'm fairly new to the world of Chickens so I'm definitely in the stage of wanting to learn as much as possible. And I'm blessed to only work part-time and can go home to enjoy the girls during my lunch hour. Hubby even built a little bench for me to sit inside the coop with them (or move it into the run) and just interact with them. I'm anxious to see how the new chicks are welcomed into the flock once it's time for integration.

Thank you for such a beautiful article!
