At the top of the list is Buff Orpingtons. In my experience I have found them to be the friendliest birds I have. I might be biased, though, since I have one. I have heard of chickens that cuddle (brahmas are known to do that) but never had one. It is my goal for my chickens to be the friendliest they can be, according to each ones specific personality.
Buff Orpingtons:
I have heard this breed be compared to Golden Retriever dogs, and totally agree. These birds come out of the egg as little yellow puff balls. When they are grown they are golden and lay light brown eggs. In the summer and spring, mine lays about an egg a day. Theyare known for going broody and hatching eggs. Mine is currently broody. It is really funny to see her puff out whenever I open the nest box to give her food or check on her. She follows me around the yard with the other chickens, and waits by the door for treats. All in all, the only con is that she is the loudest of the 9 hens.
Easter Eggers:
These tend to be skittish, but one of mine is VERY friendly to baby chicks, and has never pecked them, whereas my 3 golden wyandottes have pecked them and are mean to them. One of the pluses to EE (an abbreviation for Easter Egger) are the eggs, which can be bluish green, pinkish, or yellowish. In the spring they lay about an egg a day. Their feathers and plumage are of a variety, too. Also, they are more alert for predators than the other breeds, which is nice.
Golden Laced Wyandottes:
These are friendly and make great mothers. They are also good at laying eggs of a pinkish brown to a light brown. In the spring and summer they lay about an egg a day.
The only drawback is that they were mean to the 6-7 week old chicks I am trying to integrate into the flock. These are pretty birds, with their gold lacing and I loved this breed so I got a Silver Laced Wyandotte chick, but she turned out mean.
Most of my flock will jump on my lap if I have treats, and it seems they enjoy attention. If I go in the run they will crowd around me, pecking at my clothes, shoes, and hair. (they will peck at your clothes and hair and shoes because they are curious. it is not being mean to you.)
