How to sex muscovy ducks

100_3236.JPG
So I learned how to sex my muscovy's while raising them. i had little experience with vent sexing and the numbers became different every time. I read about it being hard to sex them but I found some easy ways to to it. Sadly you cant really sex them from the begining unless your good at vent sexing, but I will go through all the stages of life.
4 weeks old:
So at four weeks I think the most apparent signs move in. 1 sign will be the feet, a male ducks feet will be bigger than the females, and the male ducks will be much bigger, growing faster that the females. You might also notice the males will be lazier than the females.
6 weeks old:

at six weeks the carnucles might start to form, male carnucles will be first to start growing and will be darker red that the females. At this point you may be able to really start noticing difference in size. I have read that female muscovies tend to be more vocal than males but I never noticed this.
10 weeks old:
At this point you may be able to notice the different tail sizes. the female tail may be more V shaped while the males could be more U shaped. however a female can fan her tail out when broody or distressed.
12 weeks old:
At this point all the information above is way more obvious.

I hope this helped any new owners, sorry I dont have any pictures and moderates correct me if anyone of this could be false. I just went off of what I saw.

Much of what I have read (almost all) in regard to sexing muscovies does so by comparison (female to male). What if you only have 2 same age (siblings) and they seem very close in their development? Obviously I might have 2 drakes but it is impossible at 13 weeks to tell for certain. The obvious drake husses all the time and acts aggressively toward me. The other is silent and less emotional and more trusting. The slightly smaller one also does not fan the tail as much as the drake who walks around with it out much of the time. The slightly smaller one is more active and a better hunter but I assumed that is because the bigger one might be bogged down with more weight. That said the drake has flown along the ground already but it is clear they are both preparing for flight.
Your muscovies look identical to mine in color! How old are they in this pic?

the ones in the pic are all 4 female ones, i am glad to have helped, males can often act different when together.
Example pictures would be helpful. If you add pictures I will re-rate this.

The verbal descriptions are good, but hard to follow without photos.

Next time you raise ducklings please take photos for all these stages and add them. When you do I'll raise my rating. :)

I only have 2 muscovy ducks. All of the sexing information has been about comparisons but since I only have 2 and they seem to be almost the exact same in development, with the "slower" one catching up pretty quickly and that duck is somewhat more aggressive, I still don't have a clue. No trilling but sometimes a "huss" (which I cannot tell who of the is actually making that noise. I think perhaps I'll never know - that is unless one starts to lay eggs.
