How to Stay Sane During Incubation

How to stay sane during incubation - especially lockdown.

I’m not sure if anyone has had the same problem as I have-sleeplessness, insanity, and a healthy dose of impatience, especially when it comes to those torturous last three days… but hopefully these ideas can help you through.

I know not all of these will be applicable to everyone-but hopefully at least one or two can be useful to you! Most of these aren’t egg related, as I’ve found that eggs = me thinking about eggs = me being impatient.

  • Go on a walk in your neighborhood
  • Watch your poultry free-range
  • Give one of your chickens a bath
  • Go for a hike in the woods, preferably with a chicken or dog
  • Make your own bubble solution and blow the biggest bubbles you can (It’s not only for kids!)
  • Go swimming
  • Shop online something for yourself
  • Shop online something special for your poultry
  • Go outside and take pictures
  • Grab your laptop and take the time to go through your emails
  • Mow the lawn
  • Garden
  • Make lemonade
  • Make a crepe cake
  • Or bake something easy
  • Or, try a recipe you’ve always wanted to do
  • Grab your laptop and take the time to go through your emails
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Go outside and dance in the rain
  • Do a new puzzle
  • Play a board game
  • Grab your sketchbook and draw
  • Get this book and read it, start to finish
  • Unsubscribe from all those subscriptions that you never use
  • Make a fancy latte
  • Deep clean your pantry
  • Invite your friends over
  • Answer all the ‘unanswered’ threads on BYC
  • Reply to 1 thread in EVERY forum section of BYC (not including BST)
  • Take a nap
  • Stare at your incubator until you drop
  • Have a staring contest with your eggs
  • Join as many hatch-a-longs as possible
  • Write a helpful article
  • Give your pets a spa day
  • Tie your hands behind your back
  • Go on a spontaneous vacation
  • Get the brooder set up-or make sure it’s perfect.
  • Update your BYC signature and ‘about’ section
  • Greet some new members
  • Volunteer in your community
  • Offer to do something nice for someone you know
  • Binge watch a series of movies
  • Journal
  • Go through your photos
  • Sew a stuffed animal
  • Make a countdown chain of the HOURS until hatch day
  • Watch a timelapse video of eggs hatching
  • Challenge yourself to not look at the incubator for a whole 5 minutes.
  • Write a short story with illustrations
  • Go on a horseback trail ride
  • Drive around while someone tells you random directions, such as... "Turn right! Turn right! Turn left! Go straight!"
Hopefully some of these ideas helped you! I know it's hard to wait... but patience, my friend! Patience!

Happy hatching! :jumpy

This list of distractions for those times when we're challenged by having to wait, notably during the last 3 days of incubation with hatching eggs, probably includes something for everybody to try, at least once! :)
A nice, diverting piece of humor. Made me smile.
