Our Backyard Flock
(updated Sept. 2010)

Our first chickens were purchased at the local feed store as 2-4 week old chicks October of 2008. Since then, we've purchased chicks from Mypetchicken.com (mail-ordered) and have even hatched chicks from eggs.

Our original flock consisted of 2 white leghorns, 2 barnevelders, 1 production red, 3 easter eggers, & 2 barred rocks. A few months later, we added a few Black Stars and for a total of 13 pullets. Since that time, our flock has changed quite a bit. Some have left the flock for new homes and many more have joined us. We now own 21 hens and pullets, ranging from 7 months old to 2 years, plus some brand new babies still living in the house.

Our chickens stay in their run till about 3-4 p.m. We let them out in the afternoon and then they free-range in our backyard till dusk.
