I want to introduce ya'll to Ulysses S. Grant (Formerly known as Sam by his real Chicken Mama, and known as Grant by us!) and The First Ladies of Ohio.

Grant and The First Ladies came to us from another BYC'er, keljonma, as she needed a place for her flock. I was able to make a coop available, while still being able to practice good quarantine, even though I was certain her flock was healthy (and I was right!). I am not kidding when I tell ya'll that no one's chickens are as spoiled as Grant and The First Ladies! They roost on a ladder with a droppings board, are fed the best feed, get only the best straw, are used to be talked to, petted, and sang to OFTEN during the morning, day, and at night to bed. They have their own personal lights for at night. They are used to having Black oil sunflower seeds, rolled oats, yogurt, food scraps, fresh veggies, and lots of free range time. They also have their own kiddie pool for dust bathing in!

The wonderful care and pampering they are used to put me to shame with my flock!! But, I've tried very hard to maintain the standards of living they are used to, except for singing to them. I haven't quite got myself to that point yet!

But they are extremely friendly, and they are such a joy! My hope is that eventually their Mama will be able to have them with her again, as I know she misses them very much, but I am happy to give them a home for as long as needed!!

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Lovely girls you got! Beautiful names for those beautiful girls!

Wouldn't Grant need a blue and gold coat?

These next five are the Fab Five Chickerdoodles that were gifted to me last Christmas by keljonma and her husband. They were only 19 weeks old when they came to live with me, and they just turned one in I think June or July, I can't seem to remember, but I know I have it in my notes somewhere.

These five are such joys! From the moment they arrived they have kept us entertained! And each have such a different personality!

And yes, they are named after Presidents, too! (These are old pictures of them, Except Polk and Elizabeths, they were taken today. I'll work on new pics of the other three tomorrow.)

Quincy (John Quincy Adams), Blue Frizzle Cochin Rooster (He's very laid back and shy)
14550_100_5023.jpg

Polk (James K. Polk), Black Cochin Rooster, Very Majestic and noble and he knows it! Spends a lot of time waltzing around the yard. He's the most serious chicken I've ever met!
14550_polk.jpg

Monroe (James Monroe), Cuckoo Marans Rooster. He's kind of a take charge sorta guy, and he and Elizabeth stick together for the most part...except for when she's having a roundevous with Jett, our Black Sumatra!

14550_100_5027.jpg

Louisa Adams, Blue Cochin Hen. She's very much our Genteel Lady! She strolls about the yards as if she's in a beautiful blue ball gown!
14550_100_5019.jpg

Elizabeth Monroe, Cuckoo Marans Hen~Nicknamed Her Royal Highness because everything has to be her way or the highway! She's very assertive and knows just what she wants, and isn't afraid to go after it! (in most instances, that's our Black Sumatra, Jett!)
14550_elizabeth.jpg

And this is Louisa and Polk's love child, who's yet unnamed since I'm not sure if we have a pullet or cockerel yet!

As far as Grant needing a blue and gold coat, I'll ask keljonma. I know she named him and The First Ladies after the ones she felt they most resembled either by their behavior or how they looked. (Like Quincy would have been Barbara Bush had he been a girl!)

We started with two roos. We wanted our roos to be Presidents but also Generals, since they would be our only males. So one was named Ulysses Hiram "Sam" Grant, a Golden Campine, whom we called Sam, but QA is calling Grant. The other was a Single Comb Brown Leghorn, Dwight "Ike" David Eisenhower. Sam used to pose for pictures in a stance similar to one in a picture I had of General Grant during the Civil War. Ike was brown and reminded me of a picture of the General in uniform Late WWII.

Thank you for explaining that! I hope you are pleased with the pics. I wanted to put up recent pics for you

I know how much you love them.

The Fab Five were hatched on July 17, 2008. They are all looking very fine! Sarah Childress Polk would make a fine name, if your chicklette turns out to be a pullet.

She looks like Polk did as a chickerdoodle.

Look at my pretty little chick chick chicks....

Ooooohhhhh, there's Pat.

Chick, chick, there is Lou.

I can tell you have been studying - you got everyone's breed right this time!

Life is sure quiet without The Ladies..... and Sam. But Everyone is looking good, QA!

Well, I do "tuck" them in every night and I did tell Lou that you said, "Chick chick" and she said to tell you "Chick chick" for her, too.

No joke, these Ladies KNOW when you are talking to them! It's taken them these last few weeks to get used to me. The first few days I recieved some vivid looks of scorn and disdain, as if to say, "you are NOT the one supposed to be bringing us our breakfast!"

They have been enjoying the fresh veggies I toss to them from the garden though!
