We use draw a design on the egg first, then trace the parts of the design that we want to be white (egg colored) with wax (there is a special tool we use, heated over a candle, to apply melted bee’s wax). Then we put the egg in the first (lightest) color of dye. Then we trace over the parts of the design that we want to be that color. The wax covers up the color and resists the next layer of dye, keeping that area the same color. Once the wax is done, we do the next color, more wax, and then finally the darkest color (usually black). Any parts that weren’t covered with dye remain this color. Then we have to take the wax off (the hard part) by holding the egg over a candle until the wax melts, then wiping it off. Once that is done, the design is revealed! I hope that makes sense.
