I had two Welsummers in my flock last summer and one was taken and killed by a fox. The second, Tootsie, was in the fox's mouth when my son and dog chased the fox and it dropped her. Tootsie laid her last egg the next day and she did have a small raw patch on her back which I was able to keep...
I've been getting them from more than one hen this week (one Barred Rock and one Wellsummer.) I was away for a week so my neighbor kept the chickens inside their pen, not running around, so I was worried it was stress-related. Glad to know it is "normal".

Model Chicken Contest
Name: Lily
Easter Egger (or Ameraucana?)
Lily is modeling a chicken in flight -- hard to capture
Here she is fleeing the scene of the 7 chicken photo shoot -- "I'm outta here"
This is so sad for you and your family. I lost two of my 5 hens last spring to a raccoon that sliced through a pretty sturdy screen (now hard cloth of course); luckily our dog heard it and chased it away so it only got the two. It left the ladies, too, and when I picked them up there was an egg...
Thanks; I love this place but I'm still "new" at posting. I just worked on my homepage, which was fun, and I put this photo there, too, plus one of Lily flying away after I managed to scare them all away by getting a little too close.
I just happened to see them hanging out here yesterday...
I saw them waiting in line next to a straw-filled tub under the hen house:
I watched two change places, then Henny Penny finally departed and I found
A pretty good hiding place, and the reason I had only 1 egg yesterday after 4 the day before. I got 9 eggs total today, so the 5 hens are...
Wow, I'd love to see that one. I've learned so much today by reading posts; I had never seen wrinkly eggs before, but if I do now I won't be freaked out!
Thanks, this place is great fun and very helpful.
I hope somebody answers your question about your hens laying in just two places...I don't know the answer either but all 5 of mine tend to lay in one spot, and it is not a nesting box!! They push the straw I put in the nesting boxes right out the door, but at least they found a place they like.
I got 4 eggs from my 5 hens....they all lay in the same place, and it is not a nesting box, but between the roosting bars, and yes that is an extension cord (heat lamp on a thermostat) with the eggs! Is all laying in the same place normal? It almost always happens and the eggs look like gifts to me!
This is my first post, besides one I just left on the Newcomers page today, so please forgive if I haven't got all this right. I know you folks can be a big help and also can relate to my spending hours watching my hens. They are currently being herded around by my Maremma sheepdog; we have no...
