    Sour Watermelon

Oh, just a little sour...no problem. Actually, my egg birds just ate a moldy watermelon rind a few days ago, and they're still alive. (: If it's just slightly off, I don't think there'd be a problem.

Chicks are hatching but lost one

Not all chicks hatch at the same time. That's quite normal. A baby may hatch the night before and the others hatch during the night/next day. I'd say wait 2-3 days...Momma usually stays on her nest to let most of the chicks hatch.

Snowy call duck soon to be mama... maybe!?!?! Help!

Candling does sound like a good idea...I just use a rolled-up piece of newspaper around a flashlight, and push the light right against the eggs.

How do you store your poultry feed?

We keep ours in metal trash cans as well. If we leave any bags out, it seems the rats prefer the goat feed. :(

    Share your chili secrets!

Interesting! Never heard of adding that. I do believe it'd work, though!

    Share your chili secrets!

Sweet corn helps add a delectable element of sweetness. (If you're really desperate, you can put in a little brown sugar too. Or just put some in. Just in case. ;) )

    Hurricane Sandy

I have chicks that are about a week old. (Late for that, I know.) Since it looks like the hurricane/tropical storm is headed right for our neck of the woods, and the chicks and mom are in a pen in the field that's only covered by rubber and a plywood section, I thought it would be best to put...

    Anyone preparing for Sandy?

I moved our chicken tractors at the bottom of two ridges. Hopefully that blocks the wind. Then my father and I went out as the rain started and fixed a tarp on the heritage turkeys' pen. The wind could technically carry a pen away. And these are heavy pens. You need a dolly to move them...

Hard boiling fresh eggs-This one WORKS!

Interesting! When I hardcook eggs, I try to use ones that are at least week old or so...else they look like Picasso masterpieces! :) Is it possible that yours were around that old?

Help me ladies and gents I need a simple unique egg recipie for a grow buy local potluck

I want eggnog now... I've never made it before. Yours seems to have less alcohol than the other recipe I was looking at. I want it to have a nice alcoholic flavor but not something that you have to be really careful drinking. :D

    Husking walnuts

Yes, there is an easy way (if you don't mind them not being perfectly clean). Just leave them on your driveway and drive over them with your car a few times. The tires will crush most off the hulls off, and you can roll the nuts out of their hulls with your shoe. I tried the same way you did...

Any differences in caring for a Muscovy versus a regular (Mallard descendant) duck?

Scovies like to graze, so if you have an enclosed area, or a carefully watched one, with some grass, short weeds, etc., she'd like to nip at all the vegetation. Especially seed heads!

    Hypothermic Duckling- Rescued!

While tending to my ducks one damp and chilly evening earlier this week, I found the youngest duckling outside his pen...lying stretched out on the ground. :( "Oh great, he's dead," I thought, ruefully picking up his stiffening body... and then I noticed his neck was moving! Even though his...

Announcing the new BYC Reputation System: Ovations

"Do not create multiple accounts to give points to yourself. You will be caught and all your points removed." Somehow the above seems a bit amusing. And ominous too.
