  • Hi there! I've seen some of your posts and was wondering if you would like to do an article for The Poultry Life magazine. It is completely free-lance, the only rules are keeping it slightly poultry related, and within the theme (December). Please get back to me as soon as possible.

    Hi Shabby!
Thank you for asking me to contribute! I'm not sure I have enough practical knowledge about poultry to write an article, my girls are still teaching me!
I did write a poultry related poem that would be good for December. It's called "Twas the night before chicks", (yes like the Christmas poem but no Santa).
Let me know if you're interested and how I should send it to you to review it.

The cranes are starting to arrive here. One of their winter locations is only about 30-40 miles away on the coast (Aransas Pass Wildlife refuge) so we see them flying over almost daily as they go out to forage. LoL, we're like a couple of kids "I hear the cranes!" and running out to see them fly over. 😁

Yeah, they're so loud! I live near Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, and they're there for a good while in the late winter/spring. It's very fun to watch them!

So, just guessing, you live in the southern tip of Texas? That's where they appear. And it seems you should get them pretty often due to the fact it's your profile!
Is your profile picture a Speckled Sussex?

I'm assuming they are - my chick order in March had two extra unknown chicks, and they sure are looking like Speckled Sussex now, waiting for first egg to confirm. Here's another pic with her sister, she's a bit more reddish. Charming pair they are! 🥰

They're beautiful!! :love And thanks for confirming my assumption of their breed!
I'm pretty smitten with my pair (don't tell the other ladies!), they're both sweet girls and I have been thrilled with how pretty they've become, the one in profile pic has gorgeous peacock sheen all over, can't a decent pic of it!
    Holllllld up.

    Green Jay?!! :love

Yeah, they definitely are messy little buggers haha, I usually don't notice as much though because we bed ours on straw. The spilled feed kinda blends in or falls through to the newspaper underneath.

Also-- yes, glad you caught that pasty butt early. It's not fun to deal with, and I say that from experience.

Yeah, was saying "excuse me ladies but it's Butt Inspection time", they were not amused 🤪. I'll be adding pine shavings in a day or so.
