Ducklings are pipping!! - would love some distractions!

They look great to me too. In a couple hours that will be completely absorbed and dried up/fall off.

If the others haven’t hatched and aren’t pecking at it, then just letting it rest and absorb in the incubator is best. If there are others in there you may need to protect it.

Ducklings are pipping!! - would love some distractions!

In my experience, I have found that ducks take much longer from their first pip to actually hatching. I try to give them at least a day before I intervene to avoid complications.

Just leave it be then. Have any other the others hatched?

If they are still stuck, you can peel back a little bit of the membrane. Of course, if there is any blood stop, although it appears that there shouldn’t be any.

Ducklings are pipping!! - would love some distractions!

I wanted to share a tip that I’ve found very helpful, especially when opening the incubator while the others are still trying to hatch. I move my incubator to our bathroom at lockdown. Then if I need to intervene and open the incubator, I first run a hot shower for a couple of minutes and raise...

Duck hatched with leg bent backwards

I’m in north county San Diego. This baby is so sweet and wants to live. I’ve moved them to the brooder to see how they would do and they are hopping around on one leg, eating and drinking just like everyone else.

Duck hatched with leg bent backwards

I wish I had the time for that, it’s just not realistic for me at this point in my life. I have 4 kids, lots of animals, and can barely keep up as it is. It definitely would be a consideration if my kids were older and I didn’t have so much going on. If I had the funds I would take it to the...

Duck hatched with leg bent backwards

So shockingly enough this little one hatched easily on its own without any assistance. The bones are side by side and not stacked together with the tendon completely off to the side. If I could just get the bones to line back up, slip the tendon back and wrap I would. I’m just afraid it would be...

    Coyote attack on Sebastopol Goose

I wanted to update this post in case anyone ever has a similar situation. It’s been almost two months and she is doing amazing. I kept her completely separate for 1-2 weeks. Then I had her out during the day, but separated from the boys so there wouldn’t be any mating. By one month she was back...

Duck hatched with leg bent backwards

No it won’t unfortunately. I was hoping I could manipulate it back into place and wrap it. It just hatched overnight.

Duck hatched with leg bent backwards

This poor little baby hatched with its leg bent backwards. I don’t think it’s a slipped tendon because I can’t get the leg to manipulate at all. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Was it treatable?

    Incubating shipped sebastopol geese eggs

Okay, this might be a stupid question here… when you guys cool and mist your eggs, do you physically take them out of the incubator or just take the top of the incubator off?

    Coyote attack on Sebastopol Goose

The tear is 3-4 fingers long. It’s like her skin just split open. I can’t see any other wounds, which is worrisome since I’m assuming there should be another if the coyote was carrying her in its mouth. Does anyone know if the skin will grow back together or if stitches are the only way?
