    Record keeping (breeding / hatching)

I have recently started the same project! I have been using excel and plan to track some of the topics others have mentioned. I'll list mine... Where/Who I bought the hatching eggs from (to track genetics and reliable sellers) I also plan on banding them with different color leg bands to keep...

    Quail Habitat

This what I currently have for my bobs! 6’ wide x 16’ long and 9’ high. I change stuff around now and again, but this has been GREAT for us. Houses almost 30 bobs. Surrounded by corn and we have hops growing up the sides.

Giant White Coturnix Meat-Makers "AKA Fryers"

So the other week I was reading up on the history of the Broiler Chicken and thought, why hasn't there been anyone raising quail for this purpose? Essentially, a larger than average bird that can easily be raised in a backyard that could be a substantial source of protein. So with nothing else...

Can I see your aviary/ground pen?

Originally, it was all grass like the rest of the yard, but they quickly ruined that. So now I use straw so they’re not walking in just dirt all the time. When I take out all the straw and put new in it keeps it smelling better and more sanitary. Plus in winter months it helps with insulation...

Can I see your aviary/ground pen?

Last winter I bought a roll of plastic sheeting from Ace Hardware and stapled that to the outsides of the pens and added extra bedding. The plastic kept out the wind and actually kept the pen above freezing temperatures. As long as the birds are out of the wind and dry they should be good to...

Can I see your aviary/ground pen?

It won't stop them from fighting, mine still scrap from time to time, but the space will allow them to get away from one another and not pinned down in a corner. Adding food and water on both ends of the pen and multiple hides seemed to help to. You'll spend at least $40 per roll of wire and I...

Can I see your aviary/ground pen?

I’ve read about them doing this! I’ve always used welded wire just to be safe, also I’m glad I buried some wire in my pen when I had chukars because I learned quickly they have a tendency to dig as well! Why can’t they understand it’s best for them to stay inside the cage lol

Can I see your aviary/ground pen?

Have you ever had any issues with predators getting in through that chicken wire? My dream is to have runs like that with different species of Gamebirds!

Can I see your aviary/ground pen?

I had the same issue, except with 40 bobwhites. Ultimately I decided on buying a pre built chicken run. 8’x16’ long and 9’ high. I do not regret the money one bit, and this is something a handy person could easily buy. As for hides, quail will literally sleep anywhere EXCEPT where you want them...

Thank you! I will definitely check out the forum, the sides and bottoms are all covered in 1/4” hardware cloth, I’m working on big swinging doors that will be made of hardware cloth so I can enclose the fronts at night.

Hello! I am a new member, that's not new to raising Gamebirds (Bobwhite Quail, Chukars, etc.), but I am new to raising Coturnix Quail. I am picking up 5 adult Jumbo Whites today and have about 16 eggs going into lockdown at the end of this week (also Jumbo White's from two different sellers on...
