I do have thoughts, not about the incubator though. What are you going to do with 14 chickens in a classroom? How will you deal with it when they grow up?
Figure that out now if you haven't already.
Lots of people don't think about that part of hatching chicks.
Yeah, you gotta get rid of them soon. Maybe poke them out of their holes with sticks and catch them in boxes? Sounds stupid, but it just might work...
We don't want them to get bold and attack any chickens.
She might just be adjusting her crop a few times. Sometimes they do it for 2 or 3 minutes, and it freaks me out, but then they stop and don't do it again for a long while.
Integrated Hazel into the flock. Cross your fingers for me!!! I watched for 40 minutes, and it seemed to be going great. Hazel is being dramatic, though.
Ones raised by mother hens tend to be the wisest. I would look for a local farmer to sell you some pullets, so they are old enough to know they are hens. (You could also get little roosters, but most people want hens, so pullets is my default)
Depends. If she is howling like a maniac or all puffy and circular, it 100 percent is. She's either having a hard time laying, or broody.
Howling and puffy means broody.
Yeah, sounds like egg binding. Make sure the vet is a chicken or avian vet. Otherwise they'll charge you a lot of money for nothing. I learned that the hard way. If you can't find one, there are instructions online to take out an egg. No surgery, just rubber gloves and vasaline. It sucks to do...
