Free Range or Not? What Does Everyone Prefer?

My 17 birds free range around my rural property during the day. 2 roos and an LGD, plus I am outside most of the time working on stuff, a stay-at-homesteader. We have every predator that the Oregon woods can hold, but since we're way out in the woods, the wild critters pretty much do their...

    Table foods for chickens

stale cereals, breads, mushy fruit, but the most favorite human/table food ever is salmon skeletons after the humans have eaten the main meal. We even stop by the docks in Florence and pick up fish heads for them.

    Oregon

Howdy Oregon Peeps! Been awhile since I posted, lots of summer work and computer problems have kept me out in the coop instead of online. :) Just an update because you all love hearing about chickens:) My 15 chicks originally arrived from MPC on April 11. Now they are nice fat pullets...

Can pullets eat chipmunks, gophers, ect.?

My 13 week old pullets love young - just-furred or still pink mice. When i find a nest of mice now I know what to do with them. :)

What treat did your chickies get today?

MIne got leftover gristle and fat scraps from the beef barbecue. I've been feeling that they need more protein - they went CRAZY for this stuff. The dog was jealous. :) DOn't worry I never feed the chickens next to the dog or vice versa. That could get ugly.

    smell?

I was having that same problem I noticed you are in Oregon like me (Swisshome!), maybe you have heavy soil that doesn't drain well? I have heavy clay that I'm working on amending with lots of wood shavings and such. I rake my chicken area a lot and it does seem to help some, but I'd like to...

I put mine on the bottoms of 5-gal buckets hung various places; no PVC pipes or pressure. Until the chickens figured it out there was a lot of peck -peck-peck - drop hitting the floor. BUt now that they figured it out, the drop goes mostly in the beak. I still have founts out too, the chickens...

Beware the Black and White EE's ;-) Rehoming Roo's in Oregon

Reporting from their humble new re-home: Manny and OnRay were just the Roos I was looking for: beautiful young brothers. They traveled well and settled in tonight very easily, I spent a long time holding them and talking to them and feeding them sweet corn. They like being held, that's for sure...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: I can't stand that crap myself and I'm supposedly a human. I like to run around barefoot in the dirt and sleep outside. Stop jabbering, don't touch me and what's in that cup?

you know you're a chicken person when.....

Every time we get a movie from netflix and there happens to be chickens, or we're driving along somewhere and I spot some, I can't help it, I yell "chickENNNNNNNNNNNNNNS BOCKBOCKBOCK!!!" I live and drive around with other special people so its entirely understood and OK. ;)
