Ameraucana

The Ameraucana was developed in the 70's by a few people who were trying to standardize the...
Pros: Cute, cuddly, smart.
Cons: Escapers
These chickens are very nice. Our hens were the sweetest and calmest the minute we got them. They lay light blue eggs. Our Buff Orpington's laid more eggs, but these chickens laid more than our frizzle! They are great with children, so a great family pet. Enjoy these cute chickens!
Pros: Awesome egg layers, lays pretty eggs, very fast, good for confinement or free range
Cons: Love to escape
We only have one Ameraucana hen, but she is absolutely amazing! She lays pretty blue eggs and lots of them. She lays at least once a day and today she even layed two large eggs! It was amazing! Even our red stars and barred rock can't keep up with her laying.
Pros: Pretty
Cons: Terrified of everything antisocial
Added 6 Ameraucana to my flock 6 months ago. So far I am disappointed all of my other breeds are calm and friendly. These birds a scared of everything and won't associate with the rest of the flock. They won't take food from my hands.
Pros: Quiet
Cons: VERY Messy eaters compared to other breeds, VERY timid, dont lay as early as other breeds.
I have 20 Hens that I've had for about 3 and a half months now. They are a LOT different compared to the Sexlinks and ISA's that I had before. I will NEVER get Ameracucana's again. They are Messy eaters, they smell more than other breeds, and are 200% more Timid than other breeds. I've raised them the same way I did the others, and am not a fan...

I dont think the Ameraucana's are even as "Smart" as the others that ive had.

At this age from my last flock, I was getting a lot of eggs every day. Ameraucana's don't lay until 5 months old, whereas the others were laying at 3 months exactly.

Pros: Pretty, get along well with other chickens
Cons: Excellent flyers (a problem is you don't free range), very active, hard to catch when you need to
We only have one Ameraecauna pullet, and she is darling but also scares me to death. Heavens help us if she ever flies over the 5' fence (which she is capable of doing), because she will have to WANT to come back over. She can outfly, outrun, and outmaneuver any creature I've ever seen! She is very cute and very clever, but that comes with a price. I am glad we have the one, but doubt we will get more. We're more used to lumbering Orpingtons!

Pros: Calm, likes to explore mine acts as the leader of my flock.
Cons: Stubborn, likes to juump over fences, mine sometimes bullies my two younger SLWs.
Mine like the other pullets is about three months old, she likes to explore alone sometimes and acts as the leader occaisionaly bullies the smaller ones and she likes to leap over the fence into my garden, stil a wonderful breed that I would highly recommend.:)
Pros: Very Friendly, beautiful, funny to watch
Cons: NONE
My little blue wheaten ameraucana's are so sweet and friendly. They have been from the start. They are beautiful birds and are the first to greet me when I go to the coop. Beatrice loves to perch on my head, shoulder, or lap. She loves dirt baths. Ingred is more refined. A little lady through and through. She comes over to be loved on too. I don't know if I just got lucky or what by I love, love love them.
Pros: "Beautiful birds lay beautiful eggs have small comb so not frost bite"
Cons: "Not the best layers"
we have 1 Ameraucana and she is by far one of the prettiest birds we have .
Pros: The eggs are really pretty, the birds themselves are really pretty as well.
Cons: Very shy!
They are pretty, so if you want them for looks they are great. The eggs are pretty, but they do not lay as well as other breeds. If you want a hen you can snuggle with I would not recommend these.
Pros: see ovarall summary
Cons: awkward, flighty.
i've had ameraucana's both times i have had chickens. they are a really pretty bird and the colored eggs are really neat. currently have some hens to cross into BCM for olive eggers.
Pros: The hens are consistent layers. The hens are very sweet, most of them docile and curious. The roosters are gorgeous!
Cons: Temperment is not consistent throughout the breed. Roosters are aggressive towards the hens.
I had Auracanas in the past and I thought these Ameraucanas would be the same. They are not. They do lay beautiful eggs. The hens are very curious which is good, and not so good. They tend to pick at each other if they get bored. I'm wondering if they are smarter than the average chicken. It was easy to train them to return to the coop when I need them to.

It seems to me that the roosters are rough on the girls. I'm not sure if it is just MY rooster, or if this is the overall disposition of the little guys.

Pros: Curious, lays blue eggs, cold hardy, broody, quiet, gentile, camouflages well, good forager, cute voice and laid early.
Cons: Very shy, dislikes being held, jumpy, broody, bottom of pecking order.
I LOVE THIS BREED!! I have one named Quanie. (I named her that because she lays a quantity of eggs!

) She has always been shy yet the first to beg for treats! (Once she even ripped a bag of mealworms to get to the goodies!!) She is three years old and is still laying frequently. Plus her eggs are blue! She started laying early at four months which is another bonus. She is my most pretty chicken of my six hens. I'm defiantly getting more of this breed in the future. The downside is that she gets picked on by all the other birds and doesn't like being held. She also goes broody once a year which is good and bad! But, I highly recommend this breed to EVERYONE!

Pros: everything
Cons: they dont lay as much as rir
these are great birds that lay decent sized colored eggs and keep my egg buyers interested.
Pros: The good ones of this breed are AMAZING, good dual purpose, big green eggs
Cons: The not so good ones of this breed can be flightly, small and lay poorly
Chicken raising wouldnt be HALF as fun without Americanas. The question is what is an Americana? These have been bred in many different ways and produced poorly by some hatcheries. At their best, they are the best, they weigh 8-9 pounds for a hen, lay huge eggs and lay all year round and until they are 5-6 years old. But you never know what you will get
Pros: Great layer, doesn't pick on others, Love her blue eggs
Cons: I dont have any
Pros: cool eggs, beautiful colors
Cons: not good layers, little skittish
I have one pullet started laying then took a 3 week break now she lays again.
Pros: Friendly, cold resistant, broody, good layers, pretty eggs
Cons: None
We have 3 Ameraucana's, one white and two black penciled. The white one has become quite the brooder, but she isn't a mean brooder (I have had hens peck me and hold my skin in their beak until I remove my hand from the nest!) and of the two black ones, one is very very friendly, she will follow you around and talk to you (which I will talk back and this results in just a little conversation while I do my work). All three of them usually lay eggs, two are mostly green while one is more on the blue side. They're normally medium sized but with the right feed and scratch, they can become very big (we've gotten jumbo out of them before)! They are also very cold tolerant due to having no wattles or combs, so we didn't have to bring them in for the freezing winter which was nice. They did stop laying during the winter, but it was because we had to take the head hen out of the flock, once it was warm enough to put her back out they started laying again.
Pros: Dual Purpose Breed, Excellent Forager, Wonderful Temperament, Blue Eggs.
Cons: Some Roosters Can Be Overly Protective Of Hens, Not All Lines Are Great Layers.
The Ameraucana was the first pure breed poultry that i kept and bread and is still a main staple here at my farm. My line of Wheaten Ameraucana has truly shown its self to be a real work horse, providing great egg production and nice heavy cockerels for butchering each spring. These birds forage well, picking every bug off the plants in my garden, and the roosters take no guff off the cats always keeping a protective eye on their hens. This breed is actually very young compared to other heritage breeds only being known in its current form since the 1970s. Still needing work on some of its conformation issues, like color in the wheaten lines, the Ameraucana is well worth the challenge to the serious breeder. Over all I would recommend this breed to any and all looking for a hearty dual purpose or homestead breed with the added bonus of beautiful blue eggs.

Pros: Friendly and talkative and cuddly! Also great layers!
Cons: One of mine flew onto the top of the coop to try to escape... but nothing else
I LOVE my two Amerecaunas Chub Chubs and Pinky. (Leather Tuscadero and Pinky Tuscadero if you're a happy days fan! ) They lay both lay an egg almost every day! They are both complete sweet hearts and will eat right from my hand and let me cuddle and hold them. <3 I love this breed and I will definitely always have a couple of these wonderful birds in my flock!
