Pros: docile, easy going, pretty eye candy, inquisitive
I purchased five Salmon Favorelle hens two months ago. They are about five months old now. They are so cute and they follow me around the barn while I'm filling up waterers and feeders. I have a wide variety of chicken breeds, but these chickens take the prize for the most inquisitive, easy-going eye-candy in the yard. They have not started laying yet, but I'm hoping to have some eggs during the winter.

Pros: good heating
Cons: bulb can blow out; bulb gets hot
I like the red colored bulbs since the light is not so harsh as the white bulbs.

I use 150 and 250 watts depending upon the need.

This works great for outdoor sheds where temps can get pretty low.

Great for newborn lambs!
Pros: only uses 14 watts; safer than heat lamps; more natural
Cons: price; "hides" chicks so you can't see them; takes up brooder space
The EcoGlow brooders definitely provide "peace of mind" knowing that there is no issue with blown lamp bulbs. The chicks seem to enjoy running underneath the EcoGlow to feel "safe." As they get older, they will jump on top and poop, but it can be cleaned easily when you're done with it.

For chicks of varying heights the EcoGlow can be adjusted so that one side is higher than the other.

The EcoGlow should not be used outdoors or in areas where the ambient temp of the room can get too cold (a heat lamp would work better for those situations).

Australorp

Updated
Pros: docile, great egg layer, winter hardy, good forager
Cons: none
I bought a mix of hatchery chicks from TSC: RIR's, EE's, BR's, and BA's.

My Australorps are by far the most docile and by far the best layers. They consistently layed through the winter. Even though they were hatchery bred, one of my Australorps went broody.

The Australorps seem to be the friendliest of the bunch since they will hang around you and are not skittish or frightened easily. They don't mind being held.

Great bird for a beginner, too since they are so easy to care for and are great layers.
