Call Duck

Pros: Cute - Haven't had them long enough to weigh in
Cons: Makes a mess!
Purchased 12 ducklings for my muscovy who was sitting on infertile eggs. She decided she didn't want to parent after that, and I was stuck raising these 12 little ones.

They are adorable, but they require a ton of work as all ducks do. Once they are outside, I love them a whole lot more!

They are 4 weeks old now, and I put them with the flock. They are doing wonderful. They sleep in a pile, so they keep one-another warm, and are the easiest to herd. I love watching them play in the water outdoors. In the barn (in the brooder) I was getting sick of all the wet shavings. They also seem less afraid of me now that they are outside. I plan to keep a trio.

Pros: Friendly, Good egg layer, good food to egg ratio, entertaining
Cons: Hard to tell them apart, Not the best in cold weather.
I've had one RSL for a year now, and she is EVERYONE'S favourite. We just purchased 19 more to help meet our demands for eggs. Our older hen free ranges with everyone else, and is the smartest chicken I have. She is friendly, lays an egg a day in the hot weather, AND the cold. She laid right through her molt. She lays a really big egg too. Hope some of the new chicks are as good as her! They already love to roost on my boots, and run when I call "chick chick chick" - they are being raised by two broodies and did seem kind of broody stupid. Took them a while to realize it was warm under mom.

I've named them all Penny, because I won't be able to tell them apart. We often yell "Penny, leave penny alone!" hehehe...

Pros: Never freezes
Cons: short cord, bottom falls off, cannot hang this thing, water overflows
It does heat the water well, but the bottom is very frustrating to attach, and if not perfectly level, it will slowly empty all over the place. The top is awkward to carry when full, so we have to use a bucket to bring the water to the water dispenser. This was the only water heater my store had. I had no choice. Water freezes very quickly.

How can you find faults with two day old chicks? Lol. Mine are so adorable. Everything they do is cute.

One of them sunbathing - looks dead, but I assure you, she/he is not :gig

Pros: Great lawn candy
Cons: My girl is not the lap chicken I expected
Wish I could agree with the friendliness aspect that everyone is raving about. My girl is not as easy to catch and didn't eat out of my hand until a week ago when she started laying. I suggest getting these as chicks if breeder quality, or from someone that has kids who handle them. I got them from someone who never handled them, and my girl was quite apprehensive regarding humans.

Pros: Friendly, Great layer
Cons: Not good in cold weather
My girl is very friendly. She loves people. She is laying right now through a horrible molt! They really have their reasons when naming them 'Production' Reds.

Polish

Pros: Sweet, Hilarious, Personable, Easy Going, Pretty
Cons: Their top hats freeze if wet in cold weather
My second favourite breed only next to the barred rock :D

I have a buff laced polish (beardless largefowl) and a self black (bearded large fowl). My black one is super friendly, loves to be handled and talked to. She is not afraid of anything. She lets strangers pick her up without a fuss. My BL is a little more skittish, but she is still very young.

Neither of mine have begun to lay yet, even though one is 10 months old

Pros: Stunning deep mahogany colours, great eggs, quiet and easily handled
Cons: Mean to other chickens, nice one minute, crazy the next.
My girl is crazy bossy. She was so shy in the beginning, and is quickly making it up to the top of the pecking order. I would say she is pretty darn feisty, but never to humans.

Wyandotte

Super Admin
Updated
Pros: Good winter breed, very nice lacing, quiet and easily handled
Cons: Mine was crazy until she got close to laying
I only have one SLW - bought from a breeder. She is stunning to look at, slow to mature, but she sure is breath-taking! I wanted a wyandotte because of their beautiful lacing, but they are extremely hard to find. We do not have hatcheries that ship them, so they must be imported stock and bred here.

I haven't had any eggs from my girl yet, so that's why I am saying she is slow to mature.

Silkie

Pros: Small, wonderful broody, great starter bird, friendly, easy to care for, kids love them
Cons: Their feathers when they get wet.
I can't think of a single negative thing to say about the silkie, except maybe their amount of eggs laid.. They are not a breed you get for eating eggs. I have three hens and a rooster. My rooster is very human friendly, takes wonderful care of his girls and usually only crows in the morning.

Muscovy

Super Admin
Updated
Pros: So many colours to choose from, great mothers, great foragers, not as messy as other ducks
Cons: Those claws!
I have a lilac pied muscovy hen. She is shy, as she was never handled before we brought her home. I find her very quiet and gets along wonderfully with my chickens. She does not go in water like my mallad x runner. I would have liked a friendlier girl, but she is very cute :)
