Wyandotte

Pros: Sweet disposition, got along with others
Cons: Not particularly hardy, did not lay for long, not good mothers.
I loved our two sweet natured Silver Laced Wyandottes, I got them from a breeder and she begged me to keep them together, as they were sisters. Of course, I did, and both were enchanting as they would 'talk" to each other, and to us, in their distinctive way, "baaaaawwwkkk???". Always sounded like they were asking a question!

However, one of them, " Sally", went broody when she was still a pullet, and hatched one chick, which she abandoned upon hatch. She's the only hen I have ever had that did that. She also did not live long. Frigg, our other one, broke my heart when she got sick a couple of years later and I could not save her. She never went broody at all. Sally's chick, Lil Orphan Annie, is a mixed breed, she has survived well so far and has all of the nice Wyandotte qualities; nice temperament. Of all three though, none seemed to lay as well as I expected. I would like to get more, but am a little hesitant, because, as I said, they did not seem to be very resistant to illness, although they were quite tolerant to cold.

Silkie

Pros: Gentle, sweet & friendly disposition; our hen was an excellent mother, our rooster was a sweetie who watched over hen & chicks
Cons: Very broody, lower on the pecking order our Silkie rooster was prone to Scaly Leg Mites because of his feathery feet.
I miss my sweet Silkie hen Izzy Lou. She lived to be almost eight years old and raised many fine families for us. Our Silkie rooster Tweety was very low on the pecking order, but it did not bother him, he was good at staying out of the way and the others did not harass him. He lived to be seven years old also, and was an excellent protector of our hens and young birds. I miss them both.
Pros: Gentle, gets along with others, calm personality, beautiful dark brown eggs
Cons: Does not lay for long
Our Flossie is barely two years old, but I think she is done laying already, I haven't seen her laying this year at all. She's a nice hen though and I would not hesitate to get more.

Pros: Sweet personality, very friendly towards people.
Cons: Ascites seems to be a problem in BR's.
Ours were BR bantams. Our roosters seemed to think that the BR's especially were hotties out of all the hens

. It created problems sometimes.
Pros: Gentle & intelligent. Savvy when freeranging, very clever and wary of predators.
Cons: hard to find adult hens to buy
I can't say enough good about these birds. We had two and they were among my top ten favorites of all the chickens we've had so far. I would not hesitate to get more.

Delaware

Pros: Sweet, easy to handle, friendly, quiet, basically nice overall
Cons: none really
I love my Suzie Q Delaware hen. She has only been broody once, but she raised a nice brood and was a good mother, and easy to handle even with her babies. She is friendly and loves to beg for food. Main concern is that she eats too much..she is a bit overweight. She tolerates all types of weather and keeps on keeping on!
