Pros: Nice terra cotta egg, well behaved
Cons: Not overly friendly, average layer
When searching for dark egg layers, I've heard many people are disappointed with hatchery chicks. I have to admit tgat I was concerned waiting for my first Welsummer egg. These eggs are certainly not chocolate or particularly dark, but they are darker than my other brown egg layers with tiny speckles. I have been happy with the four or five, terra cotta eggs a week. This hen is not friendly, but she's not aggressive or mean either. She's a nice bird all around.

The reason I only have one is that Murray McMurray only offers them straight run. I got four cockerels and three hens. Two hens and one cockerel all died as chicks from an impacted crop. I find that suspect. I normally make out well with MM. Maybe a bad batch? It would have been better if I didn't have to go straight run. Oh well. I'll probably order more anyway.
Pros: Egg colors, docile, individuals, good foragers
Cons: Not predator savvy
I've had several of these chickens. The free rooster I got from the hatchery looks like the one in the main photo. I also have a red one. The hens are all unique. They have the same basic characteristics, but the details are different so you can tell them apart easily. I get blue, mint green and pink eggs. They seem to be fox magnets though. I have figured out best practices so I haven't lost any lately. I look forward to getting more. Pet class, here I come!
Pros: Small, easy to handle, friendly, beautiful
Cons: Males are highly aggressive
We have two pair of these - black and blue. The females are sweet and make good show birds for small children. The lay enormous eggs considering their body size. The males are very agressive as is to be expected, but can be handled because of their small size. Just make sure you wear sleeves. They can also be tamed by frequent handling. These little guys don't know their little and will try to play with the big ones, which doesn't work out well. They really need their own housing and run.

Pros: Good eggs, tame, easy care
Cons: Poop a lot
I hatched these out for a 4-H project having no intention of keeping them. I ended up with a beautiful pair and I'm looking forward to getting more. The eggs are fatastic! She started laying around Christmas and gives me an egg every day. They free range in the yard, but don't go very far. They are very nice to work around and are content to hang around the kiddie pool all day. They tolerate the cold much better than chickens.
Pros: Tame, reliable, good pets
Cons: Less productive than some
I have several partridge rock hens and the only ones I lost were my fault. They lay nice eggs, but not a ton of them. The cockerels I butchered were pretty decent for a heritage breed. I recommend these nice birds for a headache free experience.
Pros: Beautiful, good free range
Cons: Mean, flighty, aggressive to other breeds
I believe these chickens hate people. They were going after other chickens combs at 5 weeks. They are fine if allowed to free range, but in close quarters, they're terrible. Beautiful birds though. I have blue ones. They'll all be in the soup pot soon. Not recommended for a mixed flock.
