Pros: I have had my birds for over a year now am very happy with them. The chicks hatch out strong and healthy. They are quietest breed I raise.
Cons: They were somewhat slow to start laying but are now laying consistently
I really like these birds. My birds are over a year old now, and I have been very happy with them so far. Neither of my hens have ever gone broody which is good because I sure do not need any more broodies. They also do not sing the "I just laid and egg song" which is nice. I am not sure if "quiet" is common for this breed but that has been my experience. I have hatched lots of chicks and they are always super strong and healthy. People who visit the ranch often comment that they are "cute" instead of beautiful. I think they are both.

Pros: Easy to use spray bottle
Cons: Pricey, but will last a very long time
This stuff has saved lives. Most recently, it saved the life of one of my hens that poked out her eye. I sprayed this stuff in the socket for a week and that is all it took. My bird maybe missing one eye, but she is alive and well and gets along fine in the flock.

Pros: Balanced
Cons: Crumble is too big
I recently switched to purina when one of my chicks got curled toes and the vet thought it was due to a vitamin deficiency. I got on BYC and read that it is often better to get feed from a commercial brand than a local manufacturer because the feed is often more balanced. So far, I have not had any problems, but I am also now supplementing my chicks with vitamins.

To me, the crumble is too big for chicks so you will want to go with the mash until your chicks are 4-5 weeks. I really don't like mash because the chicks seem to waste alot, but in the case of Purina it is the best option.

I also wish the pellet size of the layer feed were smaller. I buy crumble for my bantams.

Pros: Works great, easy applicator bottle
Cons: Bottle is small and expensive for amount you get, also needs to be re-applied daily
I love this stuff and go though alot of it. I raise polish and the chicks tend to pick on each others tops hats, so I apply this and problem solved. The only downside, you have to re-apply daily and the stuff is expensive. I pay $9 buck a bottle at my local feed store. It may be cheaper on-line.

Pros: Sweet, beautiful, decent layers year round
Cons: small eggs, Easy prey for predators
Love em. I have them in several colors including crele and lemon cuckoo. I just love em. Not great foragers. Due to limited visibility they are easy targets. : (

Pros: Dark Eggs
Cons: Broody, poor winter layer, eggs hard to hatch
I am not a huge Marans fan. I tried them because I was entranced by the egg color but am not impressed. Yes, the eggs are super dark and gorgeous by my birds are often broody and I have not seen an egg since end of Oct and its now the middle of Jan. I will not be getting any more. When I compare them to my Welsummers,

Frizzle

Pros: Cute
Cons: feather issues
I bought them from a hatchery and I should have known better They are over frizzled which is caused by breeding a frizzle to a frizzle. The result is over frizzled which causes brittle feathers and feather loss. If you want these cute little things, make sure you buy them from a reputable breeder and not a hatchery, and make sure you ask if both mom and pop were frizzled.

Pros: Beautiful birds and eggs
Best dark brown layers of all the breeds I've tried and I think I've tried em all. These guys are fantastic winter time layers and don't go broody. Great birds. Mine of are Whitmore Farm and I could not be happier with them.
