Silkie

Pros: fun looks, very smart
Cons: roosers can crow loud!...and all day!, rooster attacks, not very friendly
I currently own one silkie rooster and he makes me want more! He is slightly flighty since he was raised by a hen, but settles down quickly. He has created an inseparable bond with my 'alpha bully' hen and shares his own coop with her. He's such a lover, and never been a fighter! He used to nip when shy, but learned in less then a week that that wasn't acceptable. When sleepy he comes a cuddle bear and is content to sit in your lap and relax. We even shared pizza before while I worked on the computer! Huge family favorite - once they see that poofed body, you're inevitably engaged in chicken stories!

As he grew up, he grew out of that little body and became more aggressive. He attacks people and has become very rough with the hens. I keep my serama separated from him because he'd attack her then rip out feathers and skin unintentionally. He stays with my hardy Sumatra hen who puts him in his place. Those two are very independent.

I'm personally not sure if I'd get another silkie, and if I did it would be a pullet. :)

Pros: friendly, big hit with everyone!, so many fun colours, smart
Cons: small eggs, good flyers, broody!, chicks need extra care, predator magnets
I must say Seramas are my favorite breed of chicken so far, even surpassing my silkie rooster who's quite the gentle giant! One of my hens craves attention and being picked up, while the other is content perching on low tree branches. They both come when called, and have made excellent mothers.

Hatching these chicks is quite the experience - they imprinted on me at first sight. They learn their names, crave attention, and require extra time and money then the average chicken as they need nice warm brooders, special waterers, and almost powdered chick feed starter because of their size.

Such precious little birds that make such good pets - even roosters. Great inside pets, and great outside, but they need extra supervision from predators. All my chickens come inside my home at night and all return outside at a set time like an alarm, (extra alarm credit to my rooster). During the day they know where the coop is, and where the yard ends. Very easily picked up on my commands! Each of my chickens know simple commands like their name, an emergency alarm, come in and go out of the house in the morning and evening, etc.

Highly recommended to slightly more experienced chicken owners since these are not your typical RIR that adapt to everything!

Sumatra

Pros: Stunning, easy to train (ex; come when called), laying a good sized egg a day
Cons: Flighty, not cuddly
My personally owned hen, Kevin, (after the bird from 'Up'), was rescued from a bad situation, so perhaps that made her more flighty, but she is very shy about being held. She will come when called, and loves to follow and stay around people. She lays one egg a day in the same place. Very easy to handle! She comes in at night and is let out to free range the entire day. Very hardy little girl. Others don't mess with her, not even our English Mastiff! Her mother was very broody, but Kevin has never gone broody yet although she's still young (under two years). Hoping she'll become broody but her personality is very independent and may not be very motherly.

I love my chickens by personality, not so much by breed, so in general for the Sumatra breed, they are stunning, but I would not get more due to the fact that they are flighty. :)
