Brahma - Bantam

They are calm birds with wide, deep bodies, full breast and orange or yellow legs and feet...
Pros: easy to handle, decent layer, calm, and friendly
Cons: Lay smallish eggs, not a wonderful layer, but good enough.
These were one of the first chickens I owned. I got them from Eagle's Nest hatchery, and they are wonderful little birds. They are full of personality, and my rooster is a gentleman, both to me and his ladies. They are shy compared to my Polish, but they are still willing to stand in your way and cluck at you. I'm glad I chose bantam buff Brahmas for some of my first chickens! The performed wonderfully at a 4-H show, getting 2nd place in the open class.

Since we got them as chicks last March, I have gotten 150 small brown eggs out of four of them. Not a spectacular amount, but it works for me! Of course, you do need about five bantam eggs to equal two large fowl eggs.

Defiantly good for small children. My 3 year old cousin will carry my rooster around, and the rooster will fall asleep in her arms.

Pros: strking color pattern, friendly and social birds
Cons: small eggs
I had not planned to have bantams in my small backyard flock (8 hens) but I went to a Poultry Show to meet a seller for a 'Blue' Orpington pullet. She also had these girls. I couldn't resist -- now they are among my favorites -- very perky little things and I enjoy seeing them bustling around the coop --- love their fluffy legs -- :)

Pros: smart, cold hardy, gentle, show bird
Cons: teeny eggs
Brahma Bantams are amazing birds. They are extremely gentle which is a plus for kids and they make an excellent show bird at fairs. They are also great mothers. The Light is my personal favorite. McMurray Hatchery is where I got mine from.

Pros: Adventurous, pretty tame, broody
Cons: Loud, broody, escapes easily
I have 3 half batam brahmas. They look pretty much the same, except they don't have foot feathers. They are very friendly with humans. There is always a broody one. They seem to take turns. Two of them are really loud a lot of the time. The other one thinks she's one of my big new hampshire reds.

Pros: very calm
Cons: not a great layer as they age
I've had mine for almost four years and not much bothers them! They were good layers of larger eggs for a bantam breed but as they've aged they've really dropped off.
My son likes his because they can be "duel" purpose. He uses them as both egg layers and meat birds.
I found that temps don't bother them, although mud can be a problem since their feet are so "fluffy".
They do tend to have a lice problem because they're so full feathered, but I've been able to handle it without harsh chems.
