Cochin

Cochins came from China in the 19th Century. They were recognized by the APA in 1874. They were...
Pros: Friendly, Cute, Snuggly, Good around kids
Cons: NONE
They just are such a delight to have on the farm. I would not change a thing about these fun birds. "Captian Jack", my Frizzle Mottled Cochin bantam rooster, is my favorite bird on the farm. I rock him to sleep every night and wake every morning to the sound of his crow. He is very polite and is good to the girls. My coops would not be complete without a Cochin inside!
Pros: Fluffy, nice to other chickens, a awesome pet, VERY docile, a ton of personality!, beautiful, and loads more!
Cons: NO CONS!
The cochin is one of my favorite breeds! Cochins are SO FLUFFY and VERY docile! My white cochin large fowl pullet (Paisley) gets along great with the other chickens in my flock and will let you hold her and pet her! This breed works well as a pet, sweet addition to the flock, for show, and a gorgeous bird! Their feathered feet do get a little dirtier than the clean legged breeds but we have not found it to be a problem. We have also heard that they do not lay much eggs, but she lays quite well though she will get lazy in extreme weather. Paisley has a lot of personality as well! She is very, very funny, and cute constantly! She always makes us laugh! We also have a bantam rooster and he is such a sweetie! Get's along great with our other two roosters and is in no way aggressive towards humans! I would give cochins 5+ stars if possible, you will love yours!

Pros: VERY Friendly, Very Cute
Cons: None
My little brother has a Birchen Cochin Bantam Roo named Jerry. Jerry is the friendliest chicken of our flock, he even come inside the house! My brother would take him on the tree swing, so now Jerry will jump up on the swing and flap his wings to make it move! It's soo cute. Jerry also follows you around, and make the cutest noises to you. Jerry is definantly a flock fave!

Pros: Calm and beautiful
Cons: Have feathered feet which can get quite dirty
I have raised and shown Cochins since 2005 and love the breed.
The description for the breed implies that splash is a recognized variety in Cochins. Splash is not a recognized variety by either the APA and ABA. Some of the "newer" colors that were not mentioned have been recognized for over 50 years. I think the rest of the description of the breed is pretty accurate.

The recognized varieties for Cochin Bantams are: Barred, Birchen, Black, Black tailed Red,Blue, Brown Red, Buff, Buff Columbian, Columbian, Gold Laced,Lemon Blue, Mottled, Partridge, Red, Silver Laced, Silver Penciled, Whites and Frizzle.

For Large Fowl The recognized varieties are: Barred, Black, Blue, Brown, Buff, Gold Laced, Partridge, Silver Laced , White.

I did this from memory so hope I did not forget any. If the variety isn't on this list the birds are what I call projects or works in progress that may or may not become recognized by either the APA or ABA in the future.

Pros: everything
Cons: supposedly egg production
I love my golden laced cochin! One of my smartest birds. One of my nicest birds. loves humans and will cuddle with you without treats. Just amazing birds.

Egg production is said to be a problem. I dont think so if you have one or two breeds such as plymouth rocks.
They still lay eggs (~3times a week~) thats 9 eggs from three birds a week! that is still quite good (the average for backyard chickens is 5). I would reccomend cochins to anyone starting a backyard flock

Pros: Sweet personalities, very calm, excellent mothers, cold hardy, super fluffy everything
Cons: Don't handle the hot summer as well as other breeds, can take a long time to mature will start to lay eggs between 9 and 12 months
I LOVE our cochins!! Our rooster is HUGE but he is such a sweet boy! The girls are fantastic as well. They are probably the calmest breed we have in our flock. They are beautiful and so entertaining to watch! They are excellent layers once they start laying. The wait for them is completely worth it in my opinion. They tend to go broody and typically make fantastic mothers.

My Cochin is my favorite chicken. She's sweet, quiet and a good egg layer. She is beautiful black with a dark green sheen in her feathers. I have no complaints.

Pros: Friendly, Quiet, Good exhibitors, Beautiful!!
Cons: Poor layers
I LOVE THEM!!! I have one standard blue rooster properly named Blu. an di have a pair of black bantams (Martin and Maggie) and 6 partridge bantams (Luther, Leonidas, Lady, Lottie, Lexi, Laura) and I have recived many awards with them. I'm getting frmale for Blu in a couple weeks and I can't wait. It's rather dificult to hatch their eggs though because they don't lay that often. But I really enjoy just looking at them in the yard too.
Pros: so, so tame
Cons: so, so fluffy
Cochins are by far the most docile and gentle chickens I have owned, including silkies. They follow me around and stand still as I pat their backs or scratch their breast, even zoning out as if they're enjoying it. The only problem is their fluffy feathers which, though pleasing to look at and fun to play with, obscure problems I may need to find if one is injured. Also, poop tends to stick to the loose feathers around the hens vent.
Pros: friendly cuddly
Cons: none yet
my kids love playing with them they are more like pets than egg machines :)

Pros: Gentle, Great Egg Layer, Cold Hardy
Cons: None
I keep Large Fowl Cochins
This is the best bird for any kind of chicken keeping setting. While I only have cochins for showing they are the best. They are very calm birds, my younger sister showed one of mine in Showmanship for her first time and she got Reserve with her. They lay very well, better then any of my other breeds. They also get along very well with any other chicken. They are extremely cold hardy also, which is a main reason I like them due to my climate also.
And they are very beautify birds

Pros: Very very friendly, great brood hens, cutest breed
Cons: There aren't any!
Cochins are definately my absolute favorite breed! They are extremely friendly and make great pets, especially for kids. Mine come running when they see me, even the ones that weren't hand raised from chicks.

Theyre the cutest chicks, have lots of different color varieties and are very popular. I rarely hear anyone speak badly of them

Pros: Sweet, gentle, calm, kid friendly, make good pets
Cons: Not very heat-hardy
I have one cochin, Boots, a black cochin, and she is sweet as can be. I can walk right up to her and pick her up. Cochins thrive in cold climates, but basically wilt in the heat. They have no ability to keep cool once they are hot. If you live in a hot climate, I would not reccomend this breed, but, if you live in a cooler climate, GO GET SOME COCHINS!!!!
Pros: Very sweet, friendly, quiet, likes to cuddle
Cons: Feathered feet get nasty sometimes, gets hot easily, bottom of pecking order
I have a red cochin pullet named Pie. She is one of my sweetest birds! I would definately recommend this breed if you have children. I don't have kids, but this pullet is so gentle I wouldn't worry about any kids being around her. She will gently take feed out your hand, doesn't peck, and loves to cuddle. I don't know how broody she will be in the future as she is not old enough for that, but I really like cochins.
Pros: Very kind, sweet, a perfect pet, was a great egg layer
Cons: You will cry until no more tears will come out when the Cochin dies/ A snob!
My White Cochin's name was JC.
JC was a very wonderful pet to me.
She would do what I called a ROCKET SQUAT!
For some reason(s) JC was NOT a poor egg layer.
She would lay 7 days a week!
If I couldn't count on my other chickens to lay, my lovely JC would have an egg for me!

One of the funny "cons" would be that JC was quite the snob!
To the point of her snobbiness you COULDN'T HELP BUT LOVE HER!!!
She would always give you a "Are you serious?" Look~

Nobody in my flocked loved food more than good ole' JC the White Cochin.
If you're interested in a breed that's fluffly and sweet... So squishable...
Try your hand at a WHITE COCHIN!

But please note that not all Cochins will lay well.
Pros: Sweet, affectionate, calm, great mothers, fluffy, and easy to raise.
Cons: You'll end up wanting 50 cochins.
My first cochin was a plain little red girl, and she was the bomb. She raised three broods of chicks each year, and she'd come up when we called her name to get petted. Cochins make the best pet chickens, because they're so personable and sweet. They're calm around children and aren't flightly. They're just overall awesome chicks. I will be getting a couple more some day. :]
Pros: so fun to watch them walk! and interact w/ the rest of the flock!
Cons: one is a bit of a loner & often takes off to have alone time.
These girls are good layers for this breed, I get 2 or 3 eggs a week each. Aside from the one being a loner, occassionally one gets settee. I just let it run it's course. I've been told to dunk her in cold water to help her get over it, but I have not done so and it passes, she's dirt bathing w/ the rest of the flock again.

Pros: Great pets, loving, friendly, good brooders
Cons: Leg feathers get a bit messy
This is a very great breed for starters and for kids--they're sweet and gentle and hardly ever get ruffled. I had one boy that would let me lay him on his back and rub his belly; he was such a sweetheart. They're regular layers, good brooders, and great mothers. These birds certainly have a special place in my heart. :)
Pros: lovable, good egg layers, friendly, fluffy,
Cons: you will want more and will cry when the die
My cochin, Dixi was the best chicken you could ask for. As a chick, my other chickens attacked her and she slept in a roomy dog crate in my bedroom. She was the friendliest chicken around and ran up to you right when you came out of the house. She was also the most photogenic chicken you could find! A hawk got her when she died and i cried a lot when she died. I wanted to shout this out for Dixi, the most wonderful chicken ever. i lobe you and RIP

Pros: Calm, friendly, gorgeous
Cons: feet may get dirty
I have a four month old golden partridge cochin and she is extremely friendly, she'll always jump onto my back and when I pick her up she snuggles right into me.
