Orpington

The original Orpington, the Black, was developed in England in 1886 and brought to the US in...
Pros: Everything about her is pro, she is polite and waits her turn for everything. She loves to be hugged and she loves to snuggle.
Cons: Can't say a bad thing about Contessa!
We bought Contessa when she was only 4 days old and she has been a sweet bird. She was the first one to learn that when the lid of the brooder was open that she could jump up and roost. The others just watch her and can't figure it out! She loves to snuggle with me and loves eating vegetables. I couldn't ask for a sweeter bird to add to our flock!

Pros: Great layers, quiet, easy to control, broody, and the feathers are beautiful.
Cons: Molting can last a long time.
I have had some for two years now and i love them so much. They have never stopped laying and they are awesome mothers. and if they get loose, its easy to chorale them back. I have had much success in hatching them.

Pros: quiet, good layers
Cons: none can think of
I love my Buff Orpingtons. They are a quiet, good egg producing chicken. None of them have ever really gone broody on me. We had chickens when I was younger but we got rid of them. About 4 years ago we decided to get chickens again. We could not decide what we really wanted so we got some BO, RIR and ended up with a PBR that no one at the feed store wanted. The BO's were the greatest. We have since got rid of all but the BO and are continuing with them. We live in the Northeast and even in the winter we have plenty of eggs. They are so sweet and gentle and great us when we come down to the coop and in the summer we let them out in the yard and sit and watch them. They are a great breed and a good addition to any farm.

Love my Orps they are my breed of choice for both meat and eggs. Great at laying and also at hatching out their own babies. Great mothers and wonderful free range birds.

Pros: good egg layer, friendly
Cons: too friendly to predators
I just bought one last year, but she is a lover. I have to keep her in the coop though because she is too friendly. I am afraid she'll just go up and say hi to the dogs.

Pros: docile, loveable, good egg layers, good mothers
Cons: none really. Our orpington roo is aggressive but I think that is due to being the only rooster with 15 hens.

Pros: Sweet,beautiful
Cons: Weak immune system,skittish,weak layers
I had five of these and three are now dead two I don't know why one from a raccoon and now one is VERY sick and none have ever been good layers and some can be easily scared.I have been very disappointed with this breed and don't recommend them unless their just pets. They are very beautiful though and can be very affectionate(depending on the bird).

Pros: Large eggs, constantly laying, very docile
Cons: A little aggressive towards younger chickens
Very great chickens! Most of our customers love the eggs because they are very large! These chickens lay about 5-6 eggs a week! EXCELLENT BREED!

Pros: Steady layer of large brown eggs, best mother hen ever, very calm and docile
Cons: Goes broody predictably in springtime
Our Buff Orpington is probably the sweetest, calmest girl we have right now. She's not small by any means -- maybe even the biggest? -- but her personality is extremely mellow. She lays well, and her eggs are consistently large and pretty medium brown. She also goes broody pretty much like clockwork each spring, so this year we finally gave her a clutch of fertile hatching eggs to sit on and some day-old chicks to adopt on Hatching Day when a small disaster meant most of the eggs would probably not hatch. She sat on those eggs so dutifully for 3 looooong weeks, and bonded with both the hatched and the foster chicks instantly... sooo sweet. She's now mothering them, tucking all 5 under her wings at night still, showing them how to scratch and forage and roost, and doing an incredible job at it. Her mothering abilities make her priceless to our flock, so regardless of how long she lays, we'll be keeping her around.
Pros: very friendly, gentle, just want to be loved
Cons: can't think of any
We got a Buff Orpington in a bunch of ten chicks. She is by far the sweetest chicken we've ever had besides Silkies. I don't know if she's started laying yet, but she is always first in line when I go down to the coop and is a very gentle, very sweet bird. Most of our pullets and our two cockerels except for the Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Reds, and Silkies are skittish, so I'm happy to have a friendly bird.

Easy to raise. Large eggs. Not very broody. Loud, and aren't the smartest chickens.

Pros: My Photos are always being used? is this normal?
Is this normal for others to use photos that belong to others, I take a lot of pride in my photography work :)...and sell my work locally and work privately to help with small expenses. I don't mind that my photos appear from time to time but is this just a coincidence that my photos of my English Orpingtons are being used over and over on this website? or perhaps this is all normal....I wouldn't mind being given credit for my work. Just like any one else I'm glad my photos are good enough that others are joining in and using them....I do enter my photos all over the different competitions and different countries, I would hope my photos are not being stolen and I'm not given the credit that I deserved. I'm hoping there is a simple answer to all of this. As I have no reasoning to stop sharing my photos with others. I have a huge passion for all chickens and would like to continue taking photos for others. Any insight on any of this would be helpful! Thank you! Autumn Farm English Orpingtons :)

Pros: Sweet, friendly and smart
I have 4 Buff Orpington hens who are such great birds. Most of my Buff orpingtons like to be held and will fly on my shoulder even when I'm standing. They are almost 6 years old and still lay eggs like 1 time a week. (Chickens don't stop laying at any age)
They are loveable pet hens and do good in lots of free range room and are great foragers. Here it gets in the teens in the winter and upper 90s and lower 100s in the summer so there's a big range but my Orpingtons do well in both even if they do prefer the summer climate like myself.
