I like the fence/battery indicator. At a glance I can see if the fence is disrupted by something. The shock is not bad to the finger, but effective if it gets the animal at the RIGHT location. I can see noses being much more sensitive than fingers. Yes I've tested it personally!
The intermittent shock means the bird HAS to be touching the wire long enough to be shocked. So it may not get them the first time. But when it does, they don't forget it! Getting it to the exact right height for different animals can take some trial and error. I don't like the clicking sound disrupting my otherwise peaceful area. But you get used to it and it fades into the background. Plus it's a nice auditory confirmation that the fence is still working.
