Purina Start and Grow Medicated Crumbles Chick Feed

Purina® Start & Grow® Medicated chick and poultry feed gives your chicks a strong start and enhances early hen development.
Have used this in the past with good results
Pros: Chicks thrived on it.
I started using this with shipped-in chicks or chicks that were hatched elsewhere and brought here. It was good and they liked it.

I later switched to Kalbach's version as this was out of stock at both Walmart and TSC.

I don't use medicated with chicks I hatch but always do if they are imported here whichever way for their first couple of weeks. I switch to reg when I can start getting them outside.
Pieces are too large for very young chicks.
Pros: Readily available in store, competitively priced.
Cons: Crumble size is way too large for small chicks.
This was the first chick food I purchased for my first chicks. I noticed after a couple of days that they were struggling to eat it, and would often fuss at the feeder (these are dual-purpose chicks, not bantams). We ended up using a food processor to chop it down. Incredibly disappointing. The food itself is fine, but Purina needs to adjust the crumble size.

I thought so too, then got a big bag of Kalmbach's Start Right Chick Feed and it was the same thing. It's only an issue the first few days, and I wet mine too which makes it fun as one grabs a larger piece and runs off with it like they just struck gold. ☺️

We bought four different bags of chick food, and you're right, the Kalmbach was the same size! I had the best luck with Blue Seal, followed by Nutrena. Mash is a great idea. Mine wouldn't accept it until they were older, but it's worth a few attempts before putting crumble in a blender! 😂
