I bought Kyle, my Red Star, as a started pullet and she began laying shortly afterward. In my mixed flock of 4 (BO, EE and SS), she has moved to the top of the pecking order. She is friendly (the only one who consistently comes to be picked up), a good forager and very rarely takes a break from laying. Although she is not the"prettiest" of the bunch, I am very happy with my choice and am thinking of adding a Black Star in the spring for a little more variety. Overall, great chickens, especially for a newbie.

I got a black star accidentally with my PBR chick and it was the luckiest, happiest accident ever! This is my favorite hen. If I only cared about egg productivity I would have a flock of Black Stars. Quiet, friendly and never misses a day laying. Never ruffles any feathers in the flock, always happy to be picked up, and tolerant of my other animals. A nice heavy bodied hen that is not flighty. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the beauty of this mature hen- coppers and irridecents shine through their black feathers

I love these birds. They are the heartiest and friendliest birds I have had. Free range, but always lay in their coop.

I would definitely get another in the future. She's four years old and no sign of slowing down her egg production.

My red stars, comets, cinnamon queens, or what ever you want to call them are the best birds in the world. the famous 'Bird' is a red star. They are great egg layers. Consistant for the last two years - Even in the winter months. They are so friendly they come when I call to them. Very sociable and good with strangers too. I use my one to teach with kids a lot. Very cold and heat tolerant.

I bought 12 of the dark stars and i really enjoy them. They are very smart and tend to follow you around the barn yard. I have even taught them tricks. Every time i say "let's go" they twirl in a circle.. lol
They tend to be clean birds and are very good mothers. The one hen we had go broody is very good at keeping tabs on her chicks as well as anyone else around. She will make sure you understand that her babies are off limits.
Their colouring is pretty too i think. They are reliable layers and tend to be quiet and stay out of trouble.
I will buy these again.

Its the first time that we own chicken and we love it. I read about that breed before purchasing them that they were good layers and friendly chicken and its true! We were looking for good laying breed and friendly hens so our children can interact with them and that is what we got. Really happy of my hens!

I have one red star and two black stars. The red star is older by several months and is the "QUEEN" - all capital letters! She can be a bit aggressive with the black girls, especially over food. There is a significant difference in the sizes of the red and the black with the black girls being much larger even though they are younger.

My red gal has been a consistent layer since Day #1. She lays huge eggs and rarely takes a day off. I'd say she lay's at least 28-29 days out of the month. The black girls have only been laying about 2 months and their eggs are just now coming to full size. One particular girl is also laying very consistently and rarely takes a day off. The second black gal lays for 5 days and then takes a day off. Yes, I've been keeping track.

They have entertaining personalities, come running when they see me, but aren't "lap" birds. They are also fairly quiet, which is a plus. I will say they love to forage and I'll see them pacing in the run until I let them out. Due to the difference in size, the black girls consume more feed pellets than the red so - in the long run - I would think the black would be more expensive to maintain. I do think the black a more physically attractive bird than the red. Their feathers glisten with shades of green, blue, and gold at the throat. The red isn't unattractive but she's not outstanding, either.

I'm new to this hobby and chose these particular birds based on the info in the breed database here. I've been very pleased with my choice and would recommend them to anyone considering raising backyard chickens with a focus on egg production.

These are some of my best layers. Next to my Australorp hens they are my second best layers. They lay some of my largest eggs XXL Eggs is what I call them. They are among the sweetest chickens I have and befriended my children within days of pruchasing them. With their bright colouring they definitely stand out in the yard. They are all around a great hen to have in the coop.

Ginger, our red star, is a very good layer of large brown eggs. She is the smallest of our four (leg horn, jersey giant, buff orpington). She is friendly with all the other hens, always runs up to me, loves to spend time in the garden with me. She waits for me to dig a hole (to plant something) and she will jump in looking for worms I have to move her over and over again. She likes to scratch at mulch and make a mess of the sidewalks. She is easy to catch and to hold, and talks to me.

Our Red Stars were some of our very first chickens and they are so precious!! I have one in particular I swear she is talking to me when I say her name. She follows me and my husband around and comes running when I come outside. She will fly up in your face when doing anything as if to say "Whatcha doing?"! lol

They are some of our best layers, we let them free range and have never had a problem with aggression or anything like that.

Red Stars, and even the Black Stars, are sweet birds, super friendly, think they believe they are your children. We order some of these every year from McMurray and have never been disappointed. Have a few now, we raise them for a fellow farmer, and have a black star similar to the picture, think she is a cross between the two, all black but a red head, her name is Lucille and she has been with us about 3 years. She's my baby girl and loves to be cuddled and still produces. They are all lovely birds, and would highly recommend them, especially if you have children, they like to be handled. The only issue we have had is that they don't have a long life span, think it's due to the fact they lay very young and produce so much, they get worn out faster. That and they're so friendly and trusting, they almost give themselves up to predators. I'm actually surprised Lucille is still with us, she's starting to show her age, but she is the coop queen. Will be getting some day olds in the spring for sure!

My 6 red stars are 16 months old and I don't know how I ever lived without them! I decided on them over heritage breeds because my intent was just eggs in my suburban backyard! I read they were great layers and very cold tolerant and those 2 things were very important to me. They have lived up to their reputation and then some! They are very low maintenance, lay beautiful x large (I've weighed them!) brown eggs almost daily. At least 5-7 a week. They are friendly and very mild mannered. When I'm in the yard they hang right by me. My grandkids pick them up and play with them and they're very tolerant. I love these chickens and wouldn't hesitate to raise red stars again!

I like that they are great layers, but one of them is mean to new hens and the other couldnt care less. they have a wide range of temperaments.

I personally prefer breeds with diversity so that they can easily be identified, Stars tend to all look the same, they are also quite shy and pretty flighty. on the bright side they lay a big egg every day and they are color sexable.

I adopted two, two-year-old Black Stars two days ago, so far I have one egg and two beautiful hens! Artemis and Phoebee(my Black Star hens) are quiet, and docile, they don't love all the extra attention that comes from moving into a 7 person fmily but they appear to be adjusting. So far I am lovin' Artemis and Phoebee!

(Despite the price listed we actually bartered with the previous owner, so yeah no physical money was handed from person to person, but they weren't worth nothingg)
