Sussex

The Sussex was developed in Sussex County, England over 100 years ago. It was famous...
Pros: Docile, great layer, beautiful, curious, hardy
I have a speckled sussex and she is my friendliest hen! She jumps on my lap and begs for cuddles. She lays a nice sized egg every day. She is very docile (and is a beautiful girl). I highly recommend this breed. I should be getting more soon.
Pros: curious, smart, friendly, dog-like, good layer
Cons: A little TOO curious, loud
I love my Speckled Sussex! "Wynnie" is a sweetheart who I hatched in my mom's second grade classroom for a 4-H project and I adore her! She's the friendliest out of my little flock, and she always comes running to the door as I walk in. She is super dog-like, and she'll follow me into the house if I don't close the door fast enough! She's VERY curious, and sometimes pecks at my feet if I'm wearing new sandals or anything shiny. Definitely one of my smarter birds! She's always watching for the dog and runs for cover when shadows pass over head. She can be noisy when she's laying, and her cluck is much louder than the other birds. She's normally quiet, but when she is vocal you can always hear her! I love this breed, and I would totally recommend them to anyone with a bit of space who doesn;t mind noise!
Pros: Friendly, Tame, Not Flighty, Pretty, Good Egg Laying, Good with other chickens, Loves to be around people,
Cons: She is so tame that she jumps into our car with us when we leave!
This is her Picture, Her name is Comet

She is the Tamest of the tame. If anyone wants to get chickens, I'd definetly recommend a Speckled sussex!
Pros: Beautiful, friendly, talkative, smart

My chickens are currently all 4 months old, and of the 7 I have two Speckled Sussex, named Penny and Darla. They are such fun, quirky birds that are always the first to come running when I come out into the yard. They are smart, which I guess isn't always a good thing - they were the first to figure out that if you stand on the edge of the tall pot, you can reach the yummy tomatoes! And any time I come out with food, they are sure to talk to me about how much they want it. If I don't give it to them, they stand by me making all kinds of noise. Besides actually "talking" to me when I'm out there, they're quiet birds.
And they're beautiful, too! I absolutely love this breed.

Pros: good layers

these girls are calm, good layers, follow you around curious and great foragers.
Love My Speckled Sussex Chickens
Pros: Calm
Friendly
Nice
Beautiful
Cons: Too nice get bullied
Loud (if this is a problem)
I have a flock of 11. I was supposed to have 3-speckled Sussex hens, but 2 ended up being roosters. All three are very calm, extremely friendly, and easy to care for. My hen, Lucy, is too nice and ends up being low on the pecking order scale, only above the 3- Silkies. She is a good egg producer and started laying at 20-weeks.

Reactions: Old Grey Mare
Pros: Chatty, friendly, curious, healthy, beautiful plumage
Cons: Sometimes too friendly, eggs not as big as production breeds
The Speckled Sussex is the Labrador of the chicken breeds. This is the only breed that allows my daughter to touch and hold them. They follow me around the yard and are curious about everything! They love to carry on a conversation with you and let you know loud and clear when they have laid an egg. Their egg laying has been good, except for the eggs are on the smaller side compared to my Easter Eggers and barnyard mixes.

The plumage on this breed is beautiful, with a deep mahogany base tipped with black stripes and white dots. I love their squatty plump body type.

If you are looking for an all around great chicken, the Speckled Sussex is for you.

Pros: Good egg layers, easy to handle, very friendly, good looking birds.
Cons: It can be hard to tell some of them apart.
I started out with 9 of this amazing chicken unfortanutly one died. They have an amazing colorfull feathers, which can make them hard to tell apart and name. They are very good brown egg layers. They are also super super friendly they fgollow you around every where. From what I have they seem to be good setters as well, at the moment I have two setting. I would deffantly recomend them to anyone.

Pros: Friendly, curious, calm, non-aggressive
Cons: None
I bought two speckled Sussex two years ago. Out of my 16 chickens, they are definitely one of my favorite breeds. There are very friendly and the first to run up to greet me in the morning. They are not afraid or flighty and tolerate confinement very well (as I do not let my chickens free roam since I live in an area with hawks constantly flying overhead looking for a tasty meal. They are not aggressive to any of the other chickens I have. They lay well too. I just love them! In fact, I'm buying more today!
Pros: Daily layer.
Cons: None.
I have a Speckled Sussex named Patrick (after Patrick Stump, lead singer of Fall Out Boy. Yes, she is a hen.) She lays daily, and is very pretty. Gets along great with the other hens, and is very curious. Always getting into the garden. A little skittish with me, but probably just because she is new to the flock and hasn't had a lot of human contact. Got her at 4 months, is going on 7 now!
Pros: Good layers, very friendly, Handle the cold well, funny to watch
Cons: Very big, a bit noisy
My Sussex chickens are the same 4 I have had for 3 years. They love going out for runs and are very comical sometimes. They will allow you to pet them and get to know you after some time. Mine sometimes fall asleep in my arms. We get eggs everyday for around 3 years so far, excluding moulting season and some of winter time.

A funny incident I experienced that show how fun they are was when Our small dog jumped up at the side of the cage and endedup getting a peck in the nose.

They have little cons, most of which I don’t mind at all. They get very big, so I needed to extend upon the original chicken house. Sometimes they like to announce to the neighbourhood that they have laid an egg or that they want to be let out for a run, and have a passion for singing loudly in the mornings.9

Pros: Gentle, Protective
Cons: slow to mature

My SS Chickadee is the top girl in my flock. She leads with an extremely gentle hand - er, wing - warning the flock, gathering and protecting the flock and rarely pecking or being bossy. She has a pair of lieutenants to do the dirty work. She allows the lowest bird to eat with her separately when the meanies have had their fill and moved on. She is an absolutely delightful bird to look at, round and plump with a delicate small head. I love the speckles and it is very good camouflage for a free-ranging bird. She was a very funny looking chick, way behind her brooder mates in development, so I'm delighted she turned out well. She is not the best layer, unfortunately, I think she had a small deformity or injury to her vent as a chick and her eggs are often misshapen and rough, that's just her and not the breed, I imagine. She is definitely stalwart, stands up to the dogs but has a sweet and gentle manner. She's much more interested in her fellow hens then in people, but she'll let me pick her up.

Pros: talkative, keeps me company in the yard, big brown eggs everyday, beautiful colors, great mama.
Cons: a bit TOO chatty sometimes
I love my little ss hen "noffy" to death. She loves to sit on my shoulders and chat away while I tend to the flower beds. She also tolerates being held by the children in the house. She's the nicest little bugger!
Pros: Very friendly, Lovely colors, regularly give me 4-5 eggs a week, easy to train
Cons: none
I have a couple of these birds and aside from their lovely coloring, they're a very sweet-natured bird. They're awesome foragers, yet come RUNNING when I go out and yell "girrrrlies...." They follow me all over the backyard (but then again, so do my cuckoo marans). They get along great with my 3 cuckoos. I have seen no aggressive behavior at all with them. One of them insists on laying in the rose bushes, but at least I know where to look. Very happy with these birds and would recommend them to anyone. How can you lose? Good looks, good personalities and respectable egg layer too. Yes, I do have to be careful or one of them will follow me into the house-she's a pest at times

Pros: Very friendly, docile, beautiful birds, lay good eggs, mostly hang out and roost
Cons: Rooster crows A LOT, females can be a bit vocal too, can be stubborn
My mother in law to be acquired five Speckled Sussex hens and one Speckled Sussex rooster. This is the first time of owning this breed and I have to say that I am very impressed with how friendly and docile they are - including the rooster! They did come from a family who did handle them often and kept them free range so not every hen and rooster is going to behave like mine do. The rooster you can just pick up and carry around and he won't have a care in the world. They are also very beautiful birds - I love the colors of the hen and the plumage of the rooster is absolutely GORGEOUS!! The way his feathers shine and the coloring just keeps your attention. He's a beautiful guy! They haven't laid for me just yet but I heard that their eggs are very good and they mostly just hang out and roost and don't really bother with anyone or anything. They do come up to you when they first see you so they are very social and friendly!

The cons... All roosters crow, but for some reason I think mine crows a lot more than usual and also loud! If you live in a small town and have a backyard homestead - I recommend holding off on getting a rooster of any kind especially this one because he crows occasionally during the day. (Usually starts in the early morning but sometimes he'll wait until the sun is up higher.) Most of the time he will be quiet. The females can also be vocal too if they want to - it's surprising how vocal they are that it's actually funny! Them being vocal also adds on to them being stubborn, especially the roo. But overall - these are very good birds and I am having a great experience with them!

Pros: Great forager, Passive, Gorgeous, Great layer, Curious
Cons: Too adventurous?
Great birds. Curious is the first thing that comes to mind. Maybe even too curious. They sometimes wander off too far, and lost one to a predator this way.
They run to say hi, I don't handle my birds much and can pick these up no problem, work outside all day scratching, relax and passive with other birds so makes for a calm coop, they are beautiful and lay lots of eggs. I can't think of a better bird.
I've tried various breed and this one trumps them all. Would highly recommend.

Pros: Predator Wary, Great Forager, Fast Grower, Fast Layer
Cons: Tend to wander farther from home than Barred Rock
I had ordered a 10 pack of Barred Rock Pullets from a hatchery in OH. When I made my order there was a special going on "Free Rare Breed Chick with Order". The company sent me my mystery little brown chick, who kept me guessing. My special chick turned out to be a Speckled Sussex and a hen at that! I love her! She is easy to catch and layed my first egg out of the flock today! She seems to always have an eye in the sky for predators and when she takes off the others follow
Pros: smart, broody, good layers
Cons: a little to smart for their own good
This breed is my favorite thus far. We have had Speckled Sussex sine we started raising chickens in 2014.
Speckled Sussex.jpg
They are very docile towards other chickens unlike our Easter Eggers or Aracanas who are just plain bullies. They lay every day and through all seasons. They tend to be broodier than my other hens and did well raising their little ones. My only complain is they always fly out of the chicken lot when we are wanting them to stay in for whatever reason ( usually because we are gardening or planting grass seed.) However, I will say at least they also fly back in on their own and we never have to catch them.

Amazing birds!
Pros: Sweet

Beautiful

Good layers
Cons: Some people think they don’t look nice (the speckled variety, which I don’t see how... but...)

My girl hasn’t reached laying age, but I’ve heard they may smaller eggs.
My speckled Sussex, Vanelope, is so sweet and beautiful. I’d recommend them for any chicken keepers! Mine was pretty small compared to the others when she was a chick, but had grown well. Compared to sapphire gem of same age.
