Wyandotte

The Wyandotte originated in the U.S. in the 1870's. Wyandottes were made in Massachusetts,...
The Wyandottes, specifically the Silver Laced Wyandottes have a beautiful penciled pattern on their feathers.
They fairly good layers!! Some can be affectionate while other don't want to be messed with.
They lay medium to large light brown eggs!!
I recommend this breed!!
Pros: Giant eggs, barely fit in carton. Very docile and great personality.
Cons: Talking. But i love talking, some people don't
Absolutely love my Silver Laced Wyandotte. She lays big, almost ball shaped eggs. She loves people and will hang around you if your gardening, loves getting fed worms. I have plenty of hilarious stories about her.
Pros: They are very gentle, and don't peck.
Cons: The always jump over the run fence.
Colombians .. Great layers, beautiful eggs and most of all their beauty is the best. Your roosters will be falling for your Colombian hens.

Pros: Friendly, Good Layers
Cons: Usually hatchery birds, NOT on the bottom of a pecking order
I got my first wyandotte hen a while ago and I have really enjoyed her so far. She's so adventurous and interesting to watch, especially with her best friend Matilda the White Rock hen. :D Love this breed so far, my hen's a year old. So if you want a good layer, friendly chicken and active chicken get yourself a wyandotte hen/chick or maybe even a rooster. This is her (below):

Pros: beautiful bird, very friendly, often broody
Cons: cant think of a single con
we had a flock of about 30 wyandottes, such beautiful colors, many different patterns, cold hardy birds, our Rooster 'Sarge' was HUGE and he was such a good boy who protected his girls, extremely friendly and social
Pros: docile, friendly, attractive
Purchased a p[air that won 2nd place at the Raleigh State Fair. We wanted a friendly breed that wouldn't mind being held and that would be a good producer of eggs. If the man we purchased them from didn't live 4 hours away I would purchase ALL my chickens from him! Looking to add some red and blue laced pullets to the flock. We have the two 6 month olds now, a roo and a pullet.

Pros: Daily layer, very docile and beautiful!
Cons: None.
I have a Blue Wyandotte named Chanel (that should be self explanatory, the name defiantly suits her!). She lays daily and gets along with the other hens pretty well, except for getting picked on a little, she is so docile. Gorgeous. Great breed to have!

Pros: Sweetest chicken I've ever had
Cons: A bit handshy
We purchased two of these babies last year as our annual spring chicks; unfortunately lost one over the summer to a racoon, but the little runty one has grown up and made us proud with her first eggs this month!

Pros: good layers, friendly
Cons: none i think of
My 3 girls are young, 2 months old. very beautiful and a great addition to my flock.
Pros: Sweet, friendly, playful, bold, (in a good way :) loving, brave
Cons: Stubborn
I have a golden laced wyandotte pullet, who is easily the prettiest chicken in the yard. She is even friendlier than my silkie, and will follow me around, begging for treats. She is a clever little girl, and figured out how to slip through the coop barrier and into the yard (where she is normally forbidden.) Her name is Nutella, and is certainly as sweet.
We bring her treats from the house, and one day she decided it was her mission the come in. She succeed to get far as the living room, and there her trip ended, and was "escorted" outside. The next day she tried over and over again to come through the back door, only to be unsuccessful. I guess she figured she was shooting too high, and then tried to go on the deck, another forbidden place. I did not get a bit of work done!
But overall, Wyandottes are great birds!

Pros: Very cold hardy, spunky, good foragers, intelligent, good layers
Cons: some can be skiddish
I'd had Silver Laced Wyandottes since I was a kid in 4H. I've also had Golden Laced Wyandottes and the Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. They are mostly friendly, some can be a bit skiddish, and independant, but, mostly they are friendly. They are good layers of medium to large brown eggs. They are extremely cold hardy and they do fairly well in hot temperatures too. They are good foragers as well. I bought my prettiest laced hens from Cackle Hatchery in Missouri. Here's a photo of one of my GL Wyandottes "Big Momma".
Pros: Good layer, friendly, calm
Cons: None
Fluffy is a standout in our flock of 30. She's beautiful, her eggs are big, and she's so friendly! She's easy to handle, she'll follow us around and let us pet her, and she loves to come in the house and nest on our laps. She can sit there for an hour or more without being disturbed.

She's a joy to have!
Pros: Beautiful and easy to keep
Cons: None so far
We ordered 4 from McMurray Hatchery, along with 4 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Buff Rocks and we got two Roosters, one being the exotic. Being raised together, we don't have any problems. They are strong hearty birds, good layers and friendly. They free range during the day and put themselves into the coop at sundown where I lock them up from predators, we have foxes here in Utah. They were afraid to walk on the snow at first and preferred our horse barn, but since it's their first winter, I expected hesitations. Love them and would recommend them.
Pros: very cold/heat hardy, great layers, tons of beautiful varieties, nice mothers.
Cons: Not easy to tame, very skittish, not good with young children
I have a single golden laced wyandotte named Bumble, and she never fails to give me eggs. Even with frost all over the coop, she's popping out eggs. I raised her from a chick along with a ton of super friendly chicks, but she's just super skittish. She's a beautiful girl and very motherly to any younger birds in the flock, but she just doesn't like humans.

Pros: Best winter layers I've ever had.
Cons: Slack off a little bit in very hot weather.
I always have wyandottes around.
They lay a lot in cold weather where the others drop off.
A great variety of colors so I never get bored.

Pros: nice, fluffy good layers
Cons: sometimes foolishly brave
I have 2 gold laced wyandottes, and they are my favorite of the flock! they are so fluffy and sweet, they will jump on my lap at any given time, but are also very brave, steeling treats from the dog during free range time.
Pros: Beautiful, Friendly, Good Layers, Lots of Personality, Cold Hardy, Variety of Colors and Patterns
Cons: None
I have a particular interest in bantams for eggs, and for that reason I purchased bantam Wyandottes in late April of this year as day-old chicks from a hatchery. I have one golden-laced pullet, and five blue-laced red variations, three pullets and two cockerels.

I have had chickens for only three years, and the Wyandottes are the third bantam breed I have raised. The other two breeds are bantam Easter egger and bantam buff Brahmas. The Wyandottes are the friendliest of the three breeds by far. I did not handle them a great deal as new hatchlings because I ordered a larger number of chicks, and for several weeks I was unsure which ones I would keep. Nonetheless, of the six chicks I kept, all are quite friendly. One of my cockerels is in love with me, and it's adorable. He is always next to me whenever I am out in the yard or the chicken house. Two of the pullets jump in my lap every time I sit down in their presence. When I sit with them, those that don't get right in my lap are always close by, walking over my feet, brushing against my legs, chatting and looking in my eyes. They don't like to be touched, but they like very much to be quite close, and they greet me enthusiastically every time they see me.

They also have a lot of personality. My little cockerel that loves me is a total character, a goof, is very smart, and always the first to figure things out. The two cockerels get along well. He's a little hard on the girls right now, but the Brahmas are larger and older and can deal with him, and the other cockerel helps keep him in line.

The little golden-laced pullet is also a character. She is off in her own world. She flies better than any of the rest, and I find her in high places from time to time, like on top of the chicken run. She also wanders by herself more than the others, going farther away, and coming in last behind everyone else at night. They love to free range, and they stay out late, but they go in the coop every night on their own.

The pullets were a full 27 weeks old before any of them laid an egg. That is slow. I'm sure three of them are laying but the fourth one I'm not so certain of. So far they are good little layers, popping out four or five eggs a week each. It's really too soon to know fully how well they will lay in terms of both frequency and size of egg, but the indicators are quite good. These first eggs are small and I expect the eggs to be larger in the future, and more so after their first molt. Right now the eggs weigh 1-1/4 to 1-3/8 oz, with more of the larger than smaller. That is a respectable egg for a bantam, in keeping with the formula that three bantam eggs equal two large eggs from LF.
